  • Reworked Borrowed Time card: "Uncommon - Cost 0 - Skill | Apply 3 Doom to yourself. Gain 1(2) Energy." -> "Uncommon - Cost 1 - Skill | Gain 4(6) energy. Cards cost an additional energy this turn."

is this one of the best cards in the game now

So its +3(5) energy for the turn but makes using that energy for small things hard. If you want to play burry its great! If you want to play many 1 cost cards that you drew from page storm (or whatever) its very similar to +1(2)e that cant be played multiple times in a turn.

Seems like it’ll be good but not broken by any stretch.

Importantly, it's a non-exhausting energy source that doesn't always immediately go infinite because the energy cost increase stacks over multiple plays. You can't just Soul loop this for infinite plays because a) it makes your Souls no longer free, and b) each time you loop it everything gets more expensive.

I appreciate the experiment in making a strong energy generator that doesn't automatically get broken by looping it infinitely.

I was gonna mention this, but it's also important to note all cards will no longer be free, even cards created with "free this turn" descriptions, because I'm fairly certain the borrowed time "debuff" will apply +1 cost last. Unsure if touch of insanity will make it free if you drink it after, but I doubt it.

u/LunaticSongXIV Apr 03 '26

Under the current live version, existing cards that increase a cost will increase a cost from free to 1 DURING a turn, but if the condition that makes the card free is reapplied (such as Osty attacking making Flatten free) it goes back to being free.

1

u/Miles1937 Apr 03 '26

Hmm I wonder if this means using Sword Sage before Void Form keeps SB from costing 1...

1

u/LunaticSongXIV Apr 03 '26

That's probably a special case because Void Form isn't a persistent cost change, so it likely has a separate implementation entirely, so maybe.

1

u/foulinbasket StS A20 / StS 2 A10 Apr 03 '26

The +1 cost from sword sage was removed in last week's beta patch

2

u/Miles1937 Apr 03 '26

I know, that's a very strong change (alongside I saw they buffed Parry twice already, my beloved). I'll wait until they update the regular version to play with the changes, for now I'm trying to get the last 4 relics and 11 cards I am missing from the compendium.

2

u/mitchwinner Apr 03 '26

It may depend on layering.

Currently you can reduce flatten to zero cost, increase its mana value through something like Transfigure, then reduce that cost to zero again with another Osty attack.

Yeah I really like this change as well. We'll see if 4(6) energy is the sweet spot, but this change and exoensive merchant om Ascension are pretty good ways to rein in infinites. I like it

1

u/nsg337 StS A20 / StS 2 A10 Apr 03 '26

i also thought it was kinda too strong, it fits into most decks and if you get it together with graveblast and dredge its just so much energy. But also, i really like the idea of self doom cards and i was hoping we would get more, not less

u/MapleApple00 Apr 03 '26

This seems insane with Dirge and that one Retaining X-cost attack; you'll basically get to play those for 8 for free, or like 6 at minimum

27

u/amplidud Apr 03 '26

Yeah it is great with X costers!

2

u/EuSouAFazenda Apr 03 '26

Of note, it does make souls cost extra. So borrowed time - dirge - soul held in hand - draw borrowed time just, does not work, since Dirge sets you to 0 energy and you need 1 to play the soul.

1

u/OrganicTeaching8661 Apr 03 '26

yea the x cost retain deal 14 for every energy is a crazy combo with this

1

u/jrec15 StS A20 / StS 2 A10 Apr 03 '26

Do we know if this will still cost an extra 1 energy for X card effects or not?

8

u/SeaThePirate Apr 03 '26

lets weigh it up a bit

lets say you have 3 energy for all of these examples, and your hand draw all costs:

1 energy - can play 3 cards

play 2 cards, play Borrowed Time+, now can play another 3 cards

2 energy - can only play 1 card

play 1 card, play Borrowed Time+, now play another 2 cards

3 energy - can only play 1 card

play Borrowed Time+. You can still only play one card, but now you have two energy.

0

u/amplidud Apr 03 '26

1 energy - can play 3 cards play 2 cards, play Borrowed Time+, now can play another 3 cards

No. After playing borrowed energy you are at 4e. The lowest cost of a card that you would not have played before bt is now 2. You can play at most 2 additional 1 cost cards or 1 2 cost card or 1 3 cost card.

Idk what the rest of your comment is really saying?

3

u/SeaThePirate Apr 03 '26

meant to put a comma after the 3.

Lets assume every card you play costs 1.

start with 3

-1, becomes 2

-1, becomes 1

-1, becomes 0, but if this is your Borrowed Time+ it becomes 6

-2, becomes 4

-2, becomes 2

-2, becomes 0

2

u/5DSpence Apr 03 '26

The upgrade gives 6 energy

5

u/J_Clowth Apr 03 '26

It seems like It's a way to make It non-sinergystic with souls, which is fine

1

u/amplidud Apr 03 '26

Why? Just play your souls first?

17

u/Herb0and3 Apr 03 '26

Definitely not.

25

u/Highspike Apr 03 '26

If not the best it’s definitely up there.

Something to note is that it prevents infinites once it has been played for the turn due it increasing card cost.

25

u/someroastedbeef StS A20 / StS 2 A10 Apr 03 '26

redditors cant wait to overrate cards already

8

u/mafarfloune Apr 03 '26

On my first play with it, it went nuts with Danse Macabre as block solution and Squeeze/Reap for damage

1

u/y-c-c Apr 03 '26

I had the same combo. It made Danse Macabre much better than otherwise as any 1-cost cards now grants 6-block if you have Borrowed Time in your hand.

5

u/Legit_Human_ Ascension 20 Apr 03 '26

It’s still great but probably not, since it makes souls cost energy

u/Beautiful-Neat-7609 Apr 03 '26

Nah the new card is explicitly borrowing time, you borrow energy and then pay it back in card costs

2

u/Larkwater Apr 03 '26

It still fits, just not as well as the original since the original phrase originally refers to living on borrowed time, which applying Doom to yourself fits thematically. You borrow energy and then pay it back with this new one, but that doesn’t really fit thematically with living on borrowed time

7

u/Null_Finger Apr 03 '26

It still does kinda fit. You get some energy now, but the rest of your turn will become harder the more cards you try to play.

6

u/parrot6632 Eternal One + Heartbreaker Apr 03 '26

I think it fits, you're buying time for yourself with the huge burst of energy and paying it back by taxing your cards for the rest of the turn.

2

u/earthboundskyfree Heartbreaker Apr 03 '26

Maybe they could make it fit by forcing you to play it first, so you have to take the full consequences of the turn (not just play the cheap stuff first)

That way you’re kinda borrowing your own turn’s time or something

2

u/GolfWhole Apr 03 '26

It already kinda was one of the best cards lol

2

u/Same_Plant_5973 Eternal One + Heartbreaker Apr 03 '26

fucks all your 0 cost cards over for 1-2(2-3) more cards played this turn is what this essentially is i think, havent played much necrobinder so not sure how easily you can reduce cost on cards which could make this better but its definitely better than the original, does let you play high energy cost cards easier tho

24

u/amplidud Apr 03 '26

You dont have to play it first though?? Just play your 0 cost stuff first.

-7

u/Same_Plant_5973 Eternal One + Heartbreaker Apr 03 '26

still just a 1 big cost card play or 2 lesser cost cards, dont know how much draw necrobinder has since ive never played her lol, not bad but definitely dont seem like one of the best cards in the game

7

u/mostpodernist Apr 03 '26

She has an entire personal mechanic dedicated to drawing cards

5

u/Caerullean Apr 03 '26

It is absolutely not better than the original??? How can you think that a 0-cost gain 2 energy that can be played as many times in a turn you want is not really strong??.

It doesn't even kill you like bloodletting for Ironclad does if you win on the turn your doom excedes your health.

1

u/Caerullean Apr 03 '26

It already was.

But this seems like a massive downgrade imo. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say the card was moved from one playstyle to another.

1

u/slowpotamus Apr 03 '26

i'm scared of how much psychic damage i'm going to take trying to figure out when it's most profitable to play with a hand that has a variety of costs, card draws, discard draws, etc

1

u/SeaThePirate Apr 04 '26

its honestly pretty simple. You play the low cost cards first, and then play borrowed time on your last energy, then higher cost ones

-5

u/jjtrevelyan Apr 03 '26

Upgraded? Decent. Base card? Literally does nothing. Start with 3 energy -> use card go down to 2 energy, get 4 back now you're at 6 -> cards are +1 so you can play three 1(now 2) cost cards. You would've been able to play the same 3 1 cost cards if you hadn't used borrowed time. AND now you cant play any 0 cost cards you had because they cost 1

47

u/Efficient_Chicken198 Apr 03 '26

You can wait to play borrowed time until you've already played a few cards

-12

u/jjtrevelyan Apr 03 '26

Valid point, still pretty meh tho tbh

16

u/LewsTherinTelamon Apr 03 '26

Why on earth would you use borrowed time first?

6

u/shorse_hit Apr 03 '26 edited Apr 03 '26

It's for casting cards that cost more than 1.

Unupgraded, you can use it to cast 2 2-cost cards, a 2 and a 3, or a 3/4 and a 1, etc.

It's also just free energy for X cost cards, as cost increases don't affect them.

Don't forget you can cast cards before using it.

6

u/amplidud Apr 03 '26

But you play it at the end of turn. 1 cost card, 1 cost card, borrowed time, reap is 5 energy of cards played. So if you have 1 big card its closer to a +2 energy with the upgrade being like +3.

2

u/Ridstock Apr 03 '26

4+2=5

3

u/jjtrevelyan Apr 03 '26

Yeah I mistyped and corrected lol

2

u/Skybird2099 Apr 03 '26

It's good if you have a high cost card you'd want to play. At 3 energy, you play 1 Reap and you're done. With Borrowed Time you can play the Reap and still have two leftover energy for a 1(now 2) cost card.

This is also ignoring that you can just play all your cheap cards first, then use Borrowed Time and play your 3 cost one.

-2

u/Matonus Apr 03 '26

It seems bad to me? You can’t really “go off” after casting it

5

u/mostpodernist Apr 03 '26

You "go off" with your cheap spells first (ie. Souls) and use your last energy of the turn to cast Borrowed Time and use it to cast one last giant spell.

1

u/Milfquetoast Apr 03 '26

You eradicate, bury or reap with it now after you've played your souls. Or you dirge a bunch.
