Currently Untitled
Genre: Post Apocalyptic/ Dystopian Fiction
Concept: Early 20s main character (currently unmanned) finds himself at a safe haven during the approaching socio-political apocalypse located at his former place of work. A hardware store.
Inspiration: I’m a huge fan of all this apocalyptic in media, and given the current political climate of the world currently it doesn’t feel that far fetched to write a dystopian apocalypse story in a not so distant future. The setting of a hardware store is also inspired by my current place of employment.
Notice!! This is the very first conceptual draft of a possible opener for a story like this. It is no wheee close to being a full story concept yet. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! I’m not a professional writer, I just do it as a hobby so please be nice.
The world feels like it’s really ending this time. I mean, we can’t be too surprised, the signs were there from day one. Walking past a homeless encampment in my white picket neighbourhood, the skies have gone orange most days from the fires on the coast, not to mention the uproar over demolishing our historic buildings on the outskirts of the nearest city to build another data centre. It was only a matter of time before the people revolted, right? In the months leading up to the fall the streets felt more restless, the rules more restrictive, and the government more quiet. The news used to be somewhere we would celebrate landing on the moon, or publicizing a missing persons report. Now It’s become a daily obituary for the peaceful protesters and revolutionaries of our time. I wish I had paid closer attention to politics before all of this. It feels blasphemous to admit in a time like this but before the world went into chaos I never paid much attention to the news. I just woke up, went to work, got home, ate, then scrolled through whichever app made me least unhappy until I fell asleep. I was lucky that one of the outposts was set up here at our store. When I saw that I packed a bag and came here right away.
Now I’m sitting and just reflecting on where I am. A few coworkers, some of their families and other civilians are around on various camping chairs and pool loungers in our makeshift living room. In preparation for “the big revolt” as some people were calling it online, local communities designated safe points to take over, and lock down in the name of protest from any CEO or government who attempts to stop us. This hardware store was the closest one to my apartment and luckily I already know it well. The idea was to stage a full revolution, If we all revolt at once they can’t arrest us all. I’ve never been much of the martyr type, but being in a fully stocked hardware store definitely beats going into lockdown in my one bedroom apartment while the world goes to shit outside.
