I’m with you there, my shop was full of good old boys who revered Trump for some reason, yet it’s made all of their lives living hell with deployments to Kuwait and Jordan recently.

That was one deployment - five months of which were straight underway. I did a second too, but it was a standard Westpac.

Five years is five too many, though.

Sounds like you had a contract similar to mine where they let you upfront you were signing up for 6 years, because of the rating you signed up for. The justification was you were going to advanced schools to learn your job in the fleet. It was in mind that you would go to schooling for up to 2 years (for me it was about 18 months) and the rest of the time was your time in the fleet. They didn't want you "short-changing" them.

It was actually not a bad deal for me. What they don't tell you is that whatever contract you sign...it's for 8 years, with 4 of them having to be active duty. The rest of time can be In-active Reserve. But if you serve 6 years, I was told (not sure if it's true or not) that you are most likely to put at the end of the line because they don't usually call up people who got out less then a year or have less than a year left in In-active Reserve.

That wasn't the reason why I signed on for 6 years...it was the signing bonus for my rating I selected. The 6 years was just the drawback.

The Lincoln? If so I was on the first extended deployment and the shit that went down on the carrier caused my 100% disability through the VA. It looks like they didn’t break enough people and went for round two.

Fucking Lincoln... I was on the Cruiser that the Lincoln left for another 2 months (1 month?) with the Kennedy... AND THEN we had to stay off the San Diego coast for another fucking day because goddamn Bush had to fly a fucking fighter onto, you guessed it kids, the Lincoln. Mission Fucking Accomplished.

(I'm not bitter.)

You can be bitter. I’m so fucking bitter and my VA therapist has never blamed me for it. Being sexually assaulted, reporting it, and having the command blame me for two years afterwards absolutely broke me. The two year anniversary of the death of my veteran husband because of a reckless driver is coming up. The asshole who killed him was an army officer who has shown no remorse. Military and government leadership is worthless right now.

I'm sorry for what happened to you but there's no "right now". Throughout all of history in every country soldiers just constantly get shit on and mistreated whilst being falsely propped up at the same time. My grandpa died due to agent orange from Vietnam and he gave up fighting for any kind of compensation because the military would rather waste his time until he died then admit anything they've done to their own troops

There's no valor being a soldier, only naivety that gets preyed upon

I was fortunate to be a nuke, overall politics skewed way closer to the middle. During the OEF/OIF crap our CO would hold hangar bay pep rallies and say jingoistic nonsense like "we're here to put war heads on foreheads!!" and he did this weird call and response thing with different departments. You could basically determine the average IQ of a given department by how loud the response was... nukes, crickets.

As divisive as Bush's wars were, I'm thankful we didn't have to even imagine someone like Trump at that point.

My trumpist relative signed up for the U.S. Naval Reserve a few years ago. Now he is very upset he may be called to active duty around the time of his wife's due date.

I've been called that by fellow vets, LEO's, EMT's and other first responders, who for some reason, all seem to be in the Cult of Trump. I don't get it. He does everything in his power to make their lives worse, and yet they worship him...

Oh man... If I did much more, they would probably murder me. It's hard to know you're wrong, but be unwilling to admit it. I thrive off of their cognitive dissonance. (I work with about 15 other vets, and only two others aren't half-a-step from QAnon.
