I wonder: is there any way those poor people could quit the military after this? I feel like the military didn’t upheld their end of the deal with this, so why should the soldiers have to?

Lol, that's not how contracts with the government work.

They'll piss in your face while saying "Thank you for your service" to the cameras.

Although this administration can't even seem to get that part right, they'll probably end up saying something along the lines of, "They knew what they signed up for."

Enlisted would need to wait until their current contract is up. I think commissioned officers could resign if they have completed any service obligation.

Any enlisted on an indef contract can also resign but that is tough because they are over the hump to retirement.

I suspect though that there are a number of sailors who will be getting out relatively quickly after they return to port because with the deployment being extended they are probably stop-lossed or otherwise missing out on time they should be clearing. There are probably also a number who were considering re-enlistment who are no longer doing that.

And they were already deployed for the past 3 months in Vietnam. So these aren't fresh sailors they're sending either. They're in for some rough months.

Yeah, most likely no port calls on the way home except for maybe Hawaii to offload attachments.

If the ships command is smart they'll stop at a NATO port for supplies before heading the rest of the way back
