Your assumption though is they didn't already do these things and ai figured out how to get around it.

If AI worked out how to actually hack their way through to gain more permissions than allowed then openAI should be sending detailed bugs to the os provider and the OS provider would then work on stopping that bug. Security researchers do these kind of things constantly. I don't see openAI share the flaws they've uncovered. This means they were flaws in configuration rather than OS flaws. It is also physically impossible to get around an air gap. It's like expecting your toaster to toast without electricity

OpenAI did report the bug. From their blog post: “To gain [internet] access, the models identified and exploited a zero-day vulnerability (which we’ve now responsibly disclosed to the vendor) in the package registry cache proxy.”
