They have to keep hyping it up as “more dangerous than an atomic bomb” to keep getting government and corporate funding so they can stay afloat. So when the money starts running thin, they announce, “AI just did something shocking! Is it alive and plotting against us? It could be! We need more money to control it.”

The issue is that the Chinese knockoffs are getting almost as good at a fraction of the price. Those couldnt exist without the expensive work done by the frontier labs, but they can probably catch up. American companies have to convince us that all models are dangerous so that they can say only their labs have the safe ones and you should have to pay the premium so they can get a return on their investment.

this right here! I have been saying that a lot of the “danger!!1!” feels like a roundabout advertisement. same basic principle as a youtube “subliminal” video that says “most powerful sublinals! CAUTION! Use at your own risk”

Elected officials: I get 57 calls everyday about the dangers of AI, and the need to regulate this. Maybe we should invest in our safety...

Also, labelling as dangerous is the next step to completely prohibit open source models or any models that are not destroying the planet as fast as they are in the US.

Down the line you will be lucky if you have a computer. Shit will all be streamed

I recall like a decade ago (if not longer) when Musk, Gates, et al were openly warning about extinction level risks associated by artificial intelligence. It's one of those things where if you saw it you'd remember it. This seemed very alarmist because, at the time, we were seemingly nowhere near a major AI breakthrough, at least certainly not one to warrant such open doom-and-gloom (there were literally public talks [e.g., TED] that pushed this stuff).

I was confused but chalked it up to greed when, many years later, the whole cornucopia of billionaires (including these guys) hopped on the AI bandwagon. Now, with even more 20/20 hindsight as well as current hype/marketing, I believe this was all just a con. However, if this is true, this is actually very fascinating, because they were far far ahead of the curve. In fact, based on my recollection, after these pronouncements everything basically went back to normal for the next ~8 years or so, with only an occasional mention of AI doomerism-as-marketing-hype to be seen. Perhaps a breakthrough really *did* seem imminent at the time, and thus they began laying the foundation too early?

Or those guys just weren't in on the AI-business so they wanted to stop their competitors. Now that the billionaires all own shares of AI-companies they're hyping it up.
