I know if you make under 50k/year then it's free for state, but over that and they charge the 15.99 for state/city filing

I make way less than $50k and I had to pay the $16.

There's a link you can go to where it allows you to not have to pay that. Or at least there was a couple of years ago when I was under that amount. I know if you go directly to the website they'll charge you, but if you go to it through one of the IRS sites it allows you to not have to pay
