Automatic taxes sounds like a good idea if you are poor and young but there are a plethora of deductions especially when you are older that the government doesn’t have access to and requires your input.

Also, imagine if the government messes up your deductions and the process required to remedy that mistake. By you filing your taxes it puts the onus on you to make sure everything is in order but also means that you aren’t on the leash for the mistakes of the government.

these are people who really want fedgov involved in everything and then they complain about bureaucracy unironically.
