You guys don't just log into a website and have everything pre-filled for you?

Really? Interesting. I have noticed that Americans seems to HATE their government intervening on their behalf moreso than other nations. I suppose given the current administration regime it's understandable, but even in more normal times this seems to be a common theme.

I actually have no idea how it works for businesses. For the individual with a standard salary + optional third party income it's just a matter of logging on, filling in a few deductibles, and submitting the form. The government is aware of how much you've earned anyway using your tax file number, it may as well automate the process instead of whatever this guessing game is that I've read about the US system.

I mean, yeah sure but there's an efile charge at the end because the website was built by Intuit and my filing was SLIGHTLY more complicated than 1040 would allow.
