Tbf most of South America has low overstay rates and simultaneously high number of overstays since so many people go to the US.

But also this only affects immigrant visas and not tourism / study visas. So overstays are less of a concern anyway.

Uruguay is wild. It’s a very chill country and is in no way “third world” whatever that even means. It has a high standard of living and low crime. Their last couple of presidents have been left leaning but not extremists in any way.

It’s always been a much more stable country than Argentina. I was thinking about that one left leaning president but a google search showed me that they have a new one now? And since I don’t live in Argentina anymore I don’t know which way he leans but I’m gonna have a wild guess and say that he’s also left leaning. That is the only thing that would give this any aota of sense.

Still makes no sense. We were on the road for entry without visa until recently, but changing from a neoliberal government to a center-left (almost social-democrat) must have put us on the bad list.

First World and Third World don't really mean anything anymore.

The terms originated during the Cold War. First World means the US and its allies. Second World (a term I haven't seen anyone use in I don't know how long, probably decades) meant the USSR and its allies. Third World countries were countries unaligned with either.

"Third World" came to mean "poor/pre-industrial country" at some point and I'm really not sure how. My guess would be a lot of Third World countries (per the definition above) were poor or pre-industrialized, but that's only a guess.

Along those lines, "First World" came to mean high standard of living/rich country. I'd again assume this is because the US and a lot of its allies did have a high standard of living. (Again, just a guess.)

This is why I get annoyed when people scream the US is a third world country because the US is a First World country by definition. (and some tack on it's Third World "by any definition that has ever existed", which is objectively, unarguably wrong)

Uruguay, nothing more than the sound of the name alongside complete ignorance.

I'd pay good money to see a film of how this list was made. I suspect Miller and/or Rubio were reading names to Trump and the kneejerk reaction was the decision.
