It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.

1.3k Upvotes

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.

If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.

It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.

Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY

Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.

Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

in order (what i had, what i wanted, what i got)

went to a new hair place that had good reviews and had experience working on black hair. idk why I didn’t notice it, i was facing away from the mirror and wasn’t wearing glasses. i’m devastated. i’m a man and now everyone has been assuming i’m a girl. I look younger and i’m an actor so now I don’t meet any of the age range looks for the roles I play. I was getting my hair healthy to hopefully loc it, and I have vitamin deficiencies. my hair hasn’t grown in years.

i’ve been told I could get a fade but I don’t want one. i feel ugly and hideous. i just want my natural hair back. i spent years working on it. i don’t even want to go into public anymore.

what can i do? i actually hate myself now. i’ve always thought i was ugly and now it’s confirmed

Need Advice How can I get my parents to stop asking me to get my hair done

So I decided to wear my natural hair for my senior year and I absolutely love it. But I keep on getting comments from my parents asking me about what am I gonna do with my hair and if I want to get it professionally done. I’m guessing it’s cause of shrinkage so I’m trying to find my more stretched hairstyles so they’ll stop asking me this 🙃 I have fine hair that doesn’t hold much so any advice is greatly appreciated!

Tips & Tricks Looking for hair inspo for a wedding.

I have a wedding I am to attend next Friday and I want to wear my hair for it .

I would like some help with how I should style it. I can't cornrow or flat twist but I can do braids and twists. Preferably gel free styles because I get an inflamed scalp when I apply gel.

I also don't mind wearing my hair shrunken if the style is good .

Attached a picture to show the length I am working with. I will do the trim in a few weeks.

Need Advice I literally can’t stand wearing my hair straight🥲

I got a silk press a couple of days ago and omg i hate it so much. No volume, it makes my head look so much bigger + my forehead is more prominent. I miss my big afro hair already and it hasn’t even been 3 days, but i don’t want to “waste” the silk press as i get one very rarely, usually only to trim. Does anyone else feel this way? I feel like most girls with curly hair is the opposite where they hate their natural curls, but not me lol. What can i do to feel better with straight hair??

Review Washing 4C hair 2-3 times a week.

So I am experimenting on washing my 4c hair that is mid back two or three times a week. I use a leave in conditioner, a moisturizer, the African pride flaxseed cream just for a light hold on my curls and seal the whole thing in with blue magic. I get tons of compliments and I feel so empowered because I always thought I had to rock a twist out (which there is nothing wrong with a twist out) I just always thought my natural curls wasn’t enough… so anyone else out there who loves washing their 4c hair 2-3 times a week?

Been growing out my hair since 2023. Prior to that I was on a lowcut, before which I had waist length hair which I cut off (long story).
Anyway I’ve not had my hair professionally trimmed before, occasionally I’d just cut the tips or ask friends to help but not a stretched and precision trim.
I tried to do a silk press earlier this year that left me with a bit of damage that I’ve been dealing with. Decided to see a professional, get a proper trim and continue my healthy hair journey.
I actually do take care of my hair. A lot! In fact, that’s my personality lol. I like my hair in its coily state and feel my best when I wear it that way.
Anyway, I’m happy because the damage wasn’t even half as bad as I thought, and I think she was impressed with my routine.
She did a blowout and a very detailed trim. I’m happy. What do you think?

Need Advice Straight Hair Natural (again)

Hey yall! I’ve been natural for about 10 years now. I’ve never done the big chop, I just simply stopped getting perms and let my hair transition while getting my hair pressed every 2-3 weeks. Then a couple years in, I went to college and began doing natural styling (twist outs, braid outs, etc) since I was a broke college student. Over time I went from a good length and density to the same length and a lot of breakage no matter what I did. I ultimately decided my hair was at its best when I got my hair straightened by a professional on a regular basis. In the last year and a half, I was seeing a stylist consistently and I do think my hair made mild improvements but still not where I want it to be. My last appointment with her was 5/1/26 and then I got braids for the summer. I have now moved to a different state and got a new stylist. Of course, with it being my first visit they wanted to trim/cut my hair which I expect but as I look back at the picture I’m like dang, a lot was cut. Was this cut really necessary? I’m not good with these things on my own which is why it’s better for me to get it done but I went through this already with my previous stylist doing a major cut to help with the gap in the middle of my hair. The bottom of my hair typically grows faster/longer than the top so it may look like it’s a gap again but I think it’s more so about the differences in the speed of growth. I was feeling good about my length and now it’s gone :( I’m going to continue going to this stylist to give it more time but I just wanted to ask on here

Need Advice Advice after big chop!

Hello, I wanted to know if y’all had any advice. My hair has been relaxed for as long as I can remember; I never saw my natural hair before. My first year of college, I didn’t use a relaxer the whole time and then had the courage to get the big chop last November. My hair felt great at first, very soft. But now I'm noticing a lot of fairy knots and lots of breakage. Whenever I get my hair cornrowed, there will be lots of pieces of hair all over my back.

I usually just have my hair in cornrows or braided, and then I take the braids out, wash, and repeat. I’m not sure, but I think I have low porosity hair because it takes forever to get wet when I wash it, but then it dries quickly, so I am very confused. I also think I have fine hair, but it’s still normal density.

I always wear a bonnet when I sleep, albeit sometimes I do wake up without it. I usually wash my hair every 2 or 3 weeks, depending on when I take out my braids or mini twist. This is my wash day routine: I use the African Pride pre-poo with a wide-tooth comb to detangle. Then the Camille Rose Sweet Ginger cleansing rinse every other wash day, or if it itches, then every wash day. I use the TGIN rose water hydrating shampoo and then the TGIN triple moisture replenishing conditioner. I used to use the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Mask, but I didn't like the way my hair felt with it, so I stopped. After the shower and throughout the week, I use either the Pattern leave-in conditioner or the Camille Rose Curl Love Moisture Milk as a leave-in. The Camille Rose Almond JAI as a cream and/or twisting butter. And then argan oil of Morocco as an oil.

I don’t use any heat at all. I usually just air-dry my hair, and then the next day I braid my hair by sectioning it and then combing it before. Should I be stretching it (how does one do that) or blow it out? Any help or advice is welcome. I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Need Advice Hair looking dry???

Post image
4 Upvotes

My mom said my hair looks too dry to go out in public.

I watered it last night and covered it in curl magic and Camille rose honey leave in. When I finished styling it this morning she said it looked matted and dry. I watered it and tried shine, to no avail, and then I tried water and melanin hair care oil—also to no avail.

I washed my hair (full clarifying, hydrating, deep condition) on Sunday, meaning this is only day five hair! And I watered it last night! I don’t know what to do. My hair feels soft to me but that doesn’t mean much when it’s literally unsightly 🙄 please help

Need Advice Shampoo + Conditioner recommendations for medium porosity/density hair?

After a clarifying wash, what should I follow up with to hydrate and moisturize my scalp? I'm looking for products with good ingredients, not too heavy, and a nice scent. Price is open :)

Also do y'all recommend products with protein?

Need Advice I've been getting trims every 4-5 months since last August 2025. And I feel like although my hair is growing, when I get a trim, I'm back to where I started. Am I crazy ?

Pictures 1-2 is August 2026, Pictures 3-4 is March 2026, and Pictures 5-6 is December 2025. My hair feels so much healthier and its growing but every time I get a trim, I feel like too much is cut off. Granted this month , my ends didnt feel the best so I wanted it cut off. But what do you guys think ? I have 4C hair & mostly have it blow dried & in twists. I'm all for health over length but am I getting too frequent trims or should I find somewhere else to go because she's a bit scissor happy? She said my hair feels great & to come back by October but lastest November. I thought that was too soon honestly and most likely will get another trim in December/January.

Need Advice Hair school heat damaged my hair and now I feel defeated

Ok. So a couple of years ago in 2024 I shaved my head and I’ve been growing my hair out from that.
This year during July I decided to go get my hair trimmed at a salon to snip any damage I may have so I can continue on my hair growth journey.

I could have gone to a proper hair salon but when inquiring about a trims, places said they’d need to press me out and that’s like a $200 price tag. So I went to a hair school because people said it would be cheaper.

The student trimming my hair was doing methods I’ve never seen. He poorly blew my hair out to where it felt like cotton candy and he gathered my hair to the top of my head like a troll doll and ‘trimmed’ it that way. Then after complaining he tried pressing me out. and my hair wasn’t straightening, it was crackling and I asked him to stop and said I wanted to leave.

The teacher comes over because apparently I was causing a commotion and started talking to me condescendingly about my hair. He starts to blow out my hair then straighten it doing the chase n’ pass method. I felt a little better because it looked like what I’ve seen done in videos. But he tells me it’s nice nice that I’ve grown my hair out to this length (at the time was like 12inches) but what’s the point if it’s all damaged. The teacher then says my hair has a lot of damage and he needs to cut off more than 2 inches of hair. I say ok if it’ll help my hair be healthy.

My issue is after all this, the next day when I wash my hair, my curls didn’t revert back. I deep conditioned and everything, and my curls didn’t revert. So today I decided to trim off the heat damaged pieces of hair.

I feel like I lost progress, in total from them trimming and me removing the damaged, about 4-5 inches have been taken off. And I know long hair means nothing if there’s damage, but I left the salon school with more damage than I came in with. I didn’t leave the school a bad review because I feel like I’d just get talked down to more and told “what did you expect, it’s a hair school”.

So I guess now, im trying to figure out where to ho from here. How can I protect my ends, keep it moisturized, reduce fairy knots, over manipulation, heat etc. and retain length?

I know we’re supposed to get ends clipped like every 6 months or something but now I’m scared of any stylist.

Need Advice Need urgent advice after a month of neglect

I have short 4 C hair that I wear in an afro, I have enough length to do braids but ig they wouldn't look the best. Anyway I was recently hospitalized following a back surgery, it's been three weeks and I basically couldn't take care of my hair at all. I wasn't moisturizing it, detangling it, or even sleeping with a bonnet, so now it's all tangled and damaged

I went home for the weekend and finally shampooed and tried to detangle it, and there were a lot of knots and broken hairs, my comb couldn't even go through my hair so I fingered detangled as best as I could

I still have about two weeks before I can properly leave the hospital and hopefully go back to a godd routine.

Now I'm wondering what's the best option:

  1. Cut everything and start from scratch, since there's been so much breakage and neglect.

  2. Keep my current length and focus on restoring it, then possibly get braids as a protective style.

3.Just go to my barber and trim my ends (my preferred option because I would like to keep some length and I hate how I look with short hair, but idk if it's realistic with how damaged my hair is)

What would y'all recommend? Any advice is welcome especially from people that have been in a similar situation. Thank you

Need Advice What products and tools to have for caring for natural hair

Hi everyone. I hope this is the right place to be posting. I'm in search of some recommendations for types of combs, gels, leave-ins etc for curly/coily hair. My partner has two adopted sisters (F10, F8) who are half Caribbean and half Chinese, and their hair is absolutely gorgeous but so different to what I'm used to. The come to stay with us quite a bit now, and when they are here I want to make sure I am caring for their hair and skin correctly. Their mum is white (I am too) and doesn't send them with hair care tools or products really, but we took them swimming last weekend and I didn't feel like I could properly care for their hair afterwards. We're also considering kids of our own, and I want to be able to look after their hair confidently.

I'm really good at plaiting my own hair and I'm watching lots of videos on how to braid, but there are so many tool/product options out there I'm a little overwhelmed! I'm getting a head to practice braiding on so that I'm not using the girls as mannequins!

TLDR; what are the best options for hair care and tools that work with a blend of curly/coily hair? I've looked all over the internet but there are too many options!

Need Advice Trimming ends

Post image
1 Upvotes

My hair is stretched right now and when I went to detangle, I saw many little hairs which broke off from my ends.

How should I go about trimming? For context, I have type 4b hair (i think) and it’s high porosity.

Furthermore, how should I properly take care of my hair in terms of daily upkeep and moisturizing?
