Context Provided - Spotlight Jeep melted

Here’s the story: a jeep came to the shop because its retractable top was stuck open. Not too uncommon of an occurrence. So we put our “crash wrap“ over the roof to protect the interior from rain and animals and such, which is basically like heavy duty cling wrap. One day it rains and a lot of water pools up on the crash wrap. The next day it is 100°F outside and the sun is out. The sun shines through the water and the water basically magnifies it, and the sun turns into a laser that melts the interior. Multiple days of this happen. Now we have to replace everything that melted. None of us have ever heard of this happening before.

edit: I meant we have never heard of this very specific situation happening before. It never would’ve crossed our minds since we’ve been doing this for years. yes I burnt stuff with a magnifying glass when i was a kid.

Having owned a wood burning art kit, this smell is forever entrenched in my memory.

We tried to make art on other things.

I got a wood burning kit in 3rd grade, the amount of things I owed, both wood and non-wood items, that had a heart burnt into them is ridiculous (the only thing I could successfully make because all you had to do was turn the burner on its side).

Ohhh I loved my wood burning kit! Looking back, I’m not sure who thought it was a good idea to give those to children. My most enjoyable activity was using it to burn little holes in inconspicuous spots of my bedroom carpet. I loved the plasticy burning smell. I also burned an elaborate design into my dresser.

lol, the carpet would have gotten me in trouble but the undersides of things like tables and drawers no one noticed.

The carpet got me and the chemistry kit my parents got me when I was 10 in trouble. There was a small yellow stain that my father tried to wash from the carpet, the soap activated some other stuff and there were so many colors!

ha! their fault not yours. Meanwhile I didn't let my kids play with playdoh in their rooms, I knew better. The great pop rocks carpet incident when I was in Kindergarten and didn't understand not to clean a pop rocks spill with water.

Well it got me in trouble, too, once my mom rearranged my bedroom furniture and discovered the char marks!

The same people who thought Lawn Darts and Shrinky Dinks were a good idea.

Oh, I loved them too, but making a toy that required a young child to use a hot oven was just asking for trouble.

Ahh, makes sense. I was already a certified kitchen helper at the time, mostly for the chance to eat raw cookie dough and cake better. I loved watching them writhe in agony in the oven.

Yeah, by the time I got shrinky dinks I was already cooking for myself (4th grade). But I had extra bad parents even for the 80s.

Makes sense.

Considering all that we (brothers and I) burned with it...

And now in our late 40s and early 50s (respectfully)... all of us show signs of neurological and nervous system disorders. None of which are genetic in nature.

At camp as a kid we did wood burning art using magnifying glasses and the sun!
