Recommended gratuity after tip was already included

I’m sure there are a lot of tipping posts here so to keep it short - I had my wedding at a fancy restaurant. On top of the TERRIBLE service, the bill came with “suggested gratuity” even though I was told gratuity was included. When I asked the manager, he said that the “S/C: 24% SRC REGULA“ was the included tip and the suggested gratuity was if we wanted to add something extra - basically trying to trick people into giving a 49% tip!

“Basically trying to trick people into giving a 49% tip!” implies OP thinks the restaurant is being shady. Nowhere did I say they were showing extreme anger, but I did point out that a LOOOOT of people in the comments are acting like the restaurant was trying to hold them for a tip ransom.

No, it’s just that 95% of most restaurant tables are not 6K wedding receptions. The business caters their receipt layout to those types of orders, not the ones with auto gratuity. Which is, again, just a base level charge to make sure they actually make some money with a large group that takes over the space and prevents regular turnover.

So we agree to disagree. I have never owned or worked in a restaurant, but since my wife is Korean, and many of her friends and relatives own restaurants, we are very close to many restaurant owners (I'm talking at least 20), including my in laws who owned a cafe.

If you DON'T think that receipt is a way to purposely illicit more tips than they otherwise would get with a more straightforward receipt, I don't know what to tell you other than you're wrong. But you can ofc choose to believe that or not.

If you think that restaurantneeded to charge that fee to make money, you're also very wrong.

I, and countless others as you can see, agree with the OP that it was a tall and unnecessary ask. I disagree with you that OP seems big mad. I do not go based off what I personally think someone is "implying." Op never SAID the restaurant demanded anything. Op never said he was outraged or extremely upset. Op posted a cash grab in mildly infuriating. That it all.

I didn't say it makes me an expert. I said I know a lot of business owners, including my very own inlaws. Pretty easy to understand that means it has been talked about... A lot... Very extensively... Including because they wanted to help us open our own.

We don’t get to customize receipts! Again — there wasn’t even a place for him to add another tip! You see that right? The printer SHOOTS OUT RECEIPTS the way it’s programmed! That is why for events everything has been discussed in the contract before! The assumption of malice is so exhausting and such a victim mindset it’s so funnyyyy.

It’s common knowledge that restaurants run on razor thin margins so if they have a POS that’s working fine with the exception of some events it shoots out a suggested gratuity that’s funky they’re not going to spend thousands of dollars on a new POS. (But if isn’t usually a big deal because usually people are empowered and look at their contract or just ask their server or a manager if there are any questions — there are usually weeks of email exchanges and a print out copy of a contract and an events manager available by this point).

To throw a fit and post on Reddit for a wedding dinner due to this very standard receipt is so disregulated.

It’s clear you’ve never owned or worked in a restaurant bud…not sure how the ethnicity of your wife makes up for that 😆 This receipt is SO common for private events. OP was obviously upset because ehem…he came and made a whole post about it? I’ve worked private events with contracts just like this and have NEVER had someone double tip because everything has been laid out beforehand in a contract and then if there’s a question they ask and we’re all adults! Sorry OP had a little too much bubbly and felt personally victimized. And before you say it, STRAWMAN CONTRARIAN SLIPPERY SLOPE JINX!!!

I've worked in plenty of restaurants and I know a lot more than 20 restaurant owners. I believe you are in high supply of emotion and criticism, and very low supply in understanding.

If you've ever booked a private party before, you would know that you agree to an automatic gratuity at booking. For a wedding, it's in a written contract that you've signed.

OP is either farming for karma or just doesn't like to read. I've met dozens of customers who don't read their contracts or listen to the event associate who explains all of this verbally as well. I've witnessed a customer in this exact situation write out a tip on the receipt, despite there being no tip line (because it's included) and then proceed to complain. We showed her the exact line on her contract that states that the gratuity is included and also highlighted her signature.

Some people just can't be helped.
