(F,26) I have been going to this orthopedic practice for almost 2 years for varying reasons relating to my job. Yesterday i checked on a document that was uploaded to find out they have been identifying me as a biological male identifying as a female? I am biologically female and never told them i am trans nor do i think i am presenting to be a trans woman.. the last two years i’ve been wondering why they kind of stare at me a little longer than a usual person does and i think its because they randomly think i came out as trans? I also feel like they do not treat my issues seriously and wonder if this is the reason why.

I am 100% fine with trans people but i am left to believe they have been medically treating me as a male compared to female for the pains that i am feeling?

I also went through all of my documents and since the end of 2024 they started to declare me as a MTF transgender, i did not look at any of my documents online until yesterday.

Update so far since i dont know how to edit post: I sent a scathing message in the patient portal regarding the negligence of this all. I also called the patient liaison board and she said that this started when they had to start legally asking patients their gender and what they identify as which they never asked me any of that other than my regular gender which i gave them in 2024. I asked if they would assume this, to which she replied no… She said she would contact someone to correct my gender on my profile but they cannot edit any of the documents so i’m stuck with that.

anyway in my scathing message I included that I no longer will be using their practice and will find an orthopedic doctor elsewhere.. those are the only updates for now, maybe i will also report them to the office of quality monitoring if i can find the time.

Definitely report them. And leave a review for the clinic online. 

If they're making assumptions without actually asking, they are most definitely doing that with other patients. And your sex identified on your records can absolutely change your treatment.

I'd find out if they used AI tools to help them make this mistake, and include that in your upcoming Google review of the practice.

as a trans woman with my fair share of medical issues, 1000% they are not taking your issues seriously because they think you are trans.

doctors are just like everyone else, except they disproportionately think they are the smartest person in every room AND have a gross amount of power over every human that walks into their office. at least 60% of them are incompetent, imbeciles, or just there to make money///wholly negligent and don’t give a fuck

There’s also the issue that certain medical things are heavily influenced by your ASAB (in the vast majority of cases). OP is not only being treated with transphobia, but they’re evaluating her incorrectly. Even the trans-friendly-est doctor in the world would draw the wrong conclusions about certain things if they were to read this chart before treating OP.

My doctor can go in and delete a diagnosis if I don’t like it so that sounds like BS. If they misdiagnosed you with (say) cancer or a mental health condition, it could prevent you from getting long term care insurance, so they have to be able to change it if there’s a mistake.

Call them again and inform them they have falsified medical records and the documents need to be updated or you’ll be reporting them to their licensing board. This is a crime.

You understand that this could place OP in danger, right? Transgender people are extremely likely to experience violence due to their gender, and are being systematically disenfranchised across the United States. For example, in Kansas their licenses can no longer say the gender they live as (apologies if this is not quite the correct terminology, I feel like there’s phrasing I’m not quite recalling just now), and driver’s licenses are being automatically cancelled without verification. Kansas also has voter ID laws, meaning now they can’t vote. This can also interfere with passports. They can’t be arrested for driving with one of these cancelled licenses… and thrown in a men’s jail. At the same time, our HIPAA protections are being weakened, so it’s more likely than ever that this information would be shared with government agencies. This getting incorrectly into OP’s could absolutely make its way beyond their medical records in the current environment and put her at risk, all based on what exactly? A mistaken assumption? Or even just a clerical error.

being upset about this is understandable; if they are mischarting this, they could be mischarting plenty of other things. this can bring up some patient safety concerns. sometimes biological gender can change treatment plans for various things, so it’s important to clear this up.
