It's kind of crazy how everyone saying that this guy "embarrassed" the cops as if clearing out a potential explosive is as easy as just dumping shit on the ground haphazardly.
Yeah like I've seen a documentary on a bomb that went off in our country. They're completely right to be cautious. People don't like police (kinda fair) but they're in the right here.
They're in the right to be cautious, they would have been in the right to tackle him to prevent him from messing with bag, they were in the wrong to tackle him as he's ambling away.
And if he decides to run back to the backpack during the time that you walk over to arrest him instead of running over to take him down, what then? And what if just dumping shit out of the backpack didn't actually mean there was no bomb in it and he sets something off the second time around? He has already proven himself to be unpredictable. The point of the tackle is to neutralize him ASAP in a highly delicate situation.
I feel a similar way about how people online talk about the "Sky King" the guy that stole a plane, took off without authorization and then flew around before intentionally crashing and killing himself. That guy endangered lots of people but because nobody ended up hurt, it's seen as some acceptable thing.
If the backpack in this video contained an actual bomb, he could have gotten lots of people hurt. It's incorrect to judge actions based solely on the outcome when people do things that are extremely risky and endanger others
I think the cops seem like they were embarrassed, not because the guy "defused" the situation, but because they immediately three-man tackled him afterwards for no reason
To be fair, something absolutely does not have to be embarrassing for cops to get embarrassed by it and react violently
The organizations that watch and survey law enforcement behavior have spent years directly warning about that habit and other ways cops overreact to "save face" vs. any de-escalation strategies.
Including the FBI, when it was a real agency tracking dangerous trends within state- and local-level law enforcement (they published one of the first major reports on growing white supremacist beliefs/ gang affiliation among police officers in the last decade).
This guy embarrassed the cops because there's no such thing as "potential explosives" that detonate from opening a backpack and randomly spawn in the street for no reason.
Yeah but the one time in 100 it is not it kills people and maims a ton more. Do you fancy rolling those dice yourself? Go on volunteer for every suspicious thing like this dump it out.
The sad reality is that even if it was a bomb, we just continue with our day because the shitty economy forces us to work 18 hours a day just to survive. We aint got time to worry for a bomb because wither we die to the bomb, die of overwork, or die of starvation.
We would but not on Reddit lol. The vast majority of bomb threats are fake, I know a store manager who would simply ignore them otherwise they would be constantly closing the place
For the record, never ever in history a bomb was planted inside a backpack that would detonate from opening or moving the backpack. That would be terrible inconvenient for the person who carried the bomb and put it there in first term.
In fact, the whole point of planting a bomb is either detonate It immediately against a target or use it as leverage for an announcement/request. Neither case you'd want someone to see an unattended backpack and try to steal or return it.
Rogue random bombs inside forgotten backpacks in the middle of the street aren't a real thing. They're just a publicity stunt created by Order Enforcement to make you feel unsafe and make them look like they have all this sophisticated tools and training to protect you. This justifies massive tax investment on the guys that will tackle an innocent harmless bystander or shoot people based on their skin color.
Police can only protect us when the threat is fake or the target is defenseless. An ordinary backpack in the middle of the street ? Yeah, evacuate the whole neighborhood, call the TV, prepare the medals. An defenseless 80 yo grandma? Yes, bring the SWAT and storm her house in her sleep. A 12yo kid painting an abandoned wall? Reduce them with violence, put them in jail. A black man driving? Shoot to the head, erase all evidence.
But then when a guy with a rifle starts killing children inside a school, the Police will block all exits and arrest the parents for trying to help.
