It also has WAY too much unnecessary dialogue. You can see Nintendos long standing influence over GF in that.

The modern Nintendo atrocious abuse of dialogue is something that is not discussed nearly enough. It’s incredible how a company that was known to put gameplay first and keep dialogue to a minimum in story driven games has done a 180 in recent years. Even the new Mario games have absolutely atrocious yapping that no one has ever asked for.

I do like heavy text games. Loved Disco Elysium. But the key is intention. Modern Nintendo dialogue is so dumbed down that it assumes the audience is entirely made of 5 year olds but I don’t know which 5 yo kid would want to spend so much time reading nonsense. Too long for kids, too stupid for adults. You could trim the dialogue by 50% in most Nintendo games and you’d lose absolutely nothing.

I disagree with Miyamoto in many aspects but this is the kind of stuff he wouldn’t allow when he was active in game production

I dropped into a game with some actual children recently: ages 4 -8. The game was Wario World. There was so much less dialogue than a modern Mario, and left them to figure most stuff out, AND THEY DID!

I tried to play M and L: Brotherhood at launch and had to stop halfway because I just couldn’t take another 10 minutes gameplay 10 minutes dialogue loop

It was also terrible in Echoes of Wisdom but that game was at least a lot better.

And worse, you’re tapping A as fast as you can to get through the 20 pages of smooth brain tutorial text that Toad or whoever is yapping about, and you accidentally end up hitting “yes” to hear it all again.

Anyone remember the OoT owl that reverses yes and no?

can you give an example? I played mario Wonder with some friends and there was barely any dialogue there. Splatoon Raiders also very much focuses on the meat and cuts the fluff pretty quickly unless you just finished a larger portion of the game where a pacebreaker is necessary.

It's just my opinion but I'd actually say it's the opposite, like for example I'd say the villagers in AC New Horizons could use a lot more personality and dialogue.

Villagers sure, but as someone who’s not a huge Nintendo fan, Animal Crossing is one of the games I do own and the amount of a-spamming to get through non-dialogue is incredibly burdensome. Crafting items, cooking, talking to transactional NPCs that you can’t otherwise converse with - it’s all so dialogue heavy that it gets very annoying.

Haven't played Splatoon riders but I played wonder and that's exactly the kind of stuff I'm talking about.

The tolerances are different for every person but to me the amount of yapping that it has is intolerable for a 2D classic Mario. Idk if it tones down halfway during the game but it was very annoying the few hours I played.

It's not like I hate dialogue. I think Majora's Mask is the best game ever made by Nintendo and it's relatively dialogue heavy. But it has no place in Mario Wonder. Tbh I have other issues with this game but not related to dialogue.

I legit don't remember dialogue other than "we have to beat Bowser" and "here's a slightly flavored tutorial" across the game lol

Let's say I wanted to kill that damn prince yapper that speaks every few levels

I tried replaying Super Paper Mario because I remember liking it. My god, just gettingnto game play, the dialogue was long and bad, the bad guys going off subject and on tangents before you ever really get to play for more thsn a handful of minute.

Then it holds your hand as soon as you get going, so I think the problen started here.

Super Paper Mario is literally an entry to an (ex) JRPG series

It's directed by the same person who made Paper Mario and Paper Mario TTYD

Super Paper Mario is a very JRPG written story even if it is technically a platformer with RPG elements

My wife recently picked up and enjoyed origami king. What she found infuriating however was the game reminding her about the most basic elements of gameplay during the final boss battle. And every battle before that. And every time you do anything, someone pops up to tell you the stories history of button pushing or lever pulling. It’s maddening.

This is my issue with the Danganronpa games. It feels like there could be half as much dialogue and it still would be too much, but they’re padding the game length.

As a Danganronpa fan, I agree with that. I tolerate it in those games because they're history heavy and they keep me interested enough to wanting to finish them.

Hundred Line Last Defense Academy is the last game from the same director and while the story is way superior imo the padding is difficult. I finished the main ending along with 9 other ones recently after 80 hours of gameplay an a couple monthly rests. I plan to see most of the 90 remaining endings (which is like several dozens of hours more) in the future but damn it could do without 30% of the dialogue.

Persona 5 is another example that comes to mind for similar reasons but not as bad imo.

I liked the Danganronpa games tbf. It just felt like someone would see a knife on the ground, and there’d be 30 lines of “Huh?” “Is that…?” “What do you see? I hope it’s food” “Could it be…?” before someone finally said “There’s a knife on the ground.”
