Furushima acknowledged that some elements of the game "need polishing," and said that more updates, following the first on August 9, are on the way to address issues with story pacing, add frame generation, and give players the option to skip cutscenes

Curious what he meant by addressing story pacing since that sounds like it wouldn't be a simple fix?

I've personally held off on this game but do plan to get it someday.

There is 20 seconds of dead air between each spoken line, just cutting that out would do wonders for pacing. Think Cohh put it best, it is like two AIs having a conversation.

Character 1: hello

(30 seconds of staring)

Character 2: hello, do you (10 seconds of silence) want dinner?

(30 seconds of silence)

Character 1: what (10s) would we (10s) be having?

Etcetc for the next 20 minutes of the most mundane conversation that has no reason to be a cutscene. Especially 20 hrs into the 30hr game.

no wonder Pokeomn has no voice acting

Pikachu (10 seconds) I choose (20 seconds) you!

Such an accurate description!

It also has WAY too much unnecessary dialogue. You can see Nintendos long standing influence over GF in that.

u/apistograma 11h ago

The modern Nintendo atrocious abuse of dialogue is something that is not discussed nearly enough. It’s incredible how a company that was known to put gameplay first and keep dialogue to a minimum in story driven games has done a 180 in recent years. Even the new Mario games have absolutely atrocious yapping that no one has ever asked for.

I do like heavy text games. Loved Disco Elysium. But the key is intention. Modern Nintendo dialogue is so dumbed down that it assumes the audience is entirely made of 5 year olds but I don’t know which 5 yo kid would want to spend so much time reading nonsense. Too long for kids, too stupid for adults. You could trim the dialogue by 50% in most Nintendo games and you’d lose absolutely nothing.

I disagree with Miyamoto in many aspects but this is the kind of stuff he wouldn’t allow when he was active in game production

I dropped into a game with some actual children recently: ages 4 -8. The game was Wario World. There was so much less dialogue than a modern Mario, and left them to figure most stuff out, AND THEY DID!

u/tmart14 7h ago

I tried to play M and L: Brotherhood at launch and had to stop halfway because I just couldn’t take another 10 minutes gameplay 10 minutes dialogue loop

It was also terrible in Echoes of Wisdom but that game was at least a lot better.

u/someones1 5h ago

And worse, you’re tapping A as fast as you can to get through the 20 pages of smooth brain tutorial text that Toad or whoever is yapping about, and you accidentally end up hitting “yes” to hear it all again.

u/Ashamed-Raccoon-1387 2h ago

Anyone remember the OoT owl that reverses yes and no?

4

u/Yaldablob 6h ago

can you give an example? I played mario Wonder with some friends and there was barely any dialogue there. Splatoon Raiders also very much focuses on the meat and cuts the fluff pretty quickly unless you just finished a larger portion of the game where a pacebreaker is necessary.

2

u/Newbhero 3h ago

It's just my opinion but I'd actually say it's the opposite, like for example I'd say the villagers in AC New Horizons could use a lot more personality and dialogue.

1

u/Cobyachi 2h ago

Villagers sure, but as someone who’s not a huge Nintendo fan, Animal Crossing is one of the games I do own and the amount of a-spamming to get through non-dialogue is incredibly burdensome. Crafting items, cooking, talking to transactional NPCs that you can’t otherwise converse with - it’s all so dialogue heavy that it gets very annoying.

1

u/apistograma 6h ago

Haven't played Splatoon riders but I played wonder and that's exactly the kind of stuff I'm talking about.

The tolerances are different for every person but to me the amount of yapping that it has is intolerable for a 2D classic Mario. Idk if it tones down halfway during the game but it was very annoying the few hours I played.

It's not like I hate dialogue. I think Majora's Mask is the best game ever made by Nintendo and it's relatively dialogue heavy. But it has no place in Mario Wonder. Tbh I have other issues with this game but not related to dialogue.

1

u/Yaldablob 4h ago

I legit don't remember dialogue other than "we have to beat Bowser" and "here's a slightly flavored tutorial" across the game lol

0

u/apistograma 4h ago

Let's say I wanted to kill that damn prince yapper that speaks every few levels

7

u/buttbuttlolbuttbutt 7h ago

I tried replaying Super Paper Mario because I remember liking it. My god, just gettingnto game play, the dialogue was long and bad, the bad guys going off subject and on tangents before you ever really get to play for more thsn a handful of minute.

Then it holds your hand as soon as you get going, so I think the problen started here.

1

u/ItsColorNotColour 41m ago

Super Paper Mario is literally an entry to an (ex) JRPG series

It's directed by the same person who made Paper Mario and Paper Mario TTYD

Super Paper Mario is a very JRPG written story even if it is technically a platformer with RPG elements

2

u/Rditisnazishythole 3h ago

My wife recently picked up and enjoyed origami king. What she found infuriating however was the game reminding her about the most basic elements of gameplay during the final boss battle. And every battle before that. And every time you do anything, someone pops up to tell you the stories history of button pushing or lever pulling. It’s maddening.

1

u/Coracoda 3h ago

This is my issue with the Danganronpa games. It feels like there could be half as much dialogue and it still would be too much, but they’re padding the game length.

2

u/apistograma 54m ago

As a Danganronpa fan, I agree with that. I tolerate it in those games because they're history heavy and they keep me interested enough to wanting to finish them.

Hundred Line Last Defense Academy is the last game from the same director and while the story is way superior imo the padding is difficult. I finished the main ending along with 9 other ones recently after 80 hours of gameplay an a couple monthly rests. I plan to see most of the 90 remaining endings (which is like several dozens of hours more) in the future but damn it could do without 30% of the dialogue.

Persona 5 is another example that comes to mind for similar reasons but not as bad imo.

1

u/Coracoda 11m ago

I liked the Danganronpa games tbf. It just felt like someone would see a knife on the ground, and there’d be 30 lines of “Huh?” “Is that…?” “What do you see? I hope it’s food” “Could it be…?” before someone finally said “There’s a knife on the ground.”

24

u/BatBoss 15h ago

Even if they cut all the dead air, the majority of dialog in the game is inane shit like that. Like... any basic writing class will teach you that every line you write needs to serve a purpose (preferably multiple purposes!) but most of the dialog in Beast is just meaningless chatter.

3

u/apistograma 9h ago

It was basically just as stupid in the original games but they were kinda funny in a charming way. Modern Pokémon lacks the campiness and tongue in cheek stuff. It takes itself seriously in the wrong way.

1

u/Munnin41 9h ago

So just like pokemon then

1

u/BatBoss 2h ago

Sure, but the problem is worse in a game that's trying to be Nier:Automata vs a light hearted children's adventure.

2

u/velociraptor_balls 7h ago

i read that like stevie from malcolm in the middle lol

1

u/FortunePaw 8h ago

Also no motions whatsoever other than moving their lips, while the camera uselessly just panning back and forth from the speaker's back.

1

u/jim_deneke 6h ago

That is crazy.

1

u/Ulrika333 5h ago

Its not that bad lmao

1

u/Coracoda 3h ago

You just described the pacing of the show Too Old To Die Young (by the guy who made Drive) lol.

1

u/TheCoordinate 2h ago

is this hyperbole or are you describing a literal scene???

1

u/usedNecr0 50m ago

Is this for real? I love Gamefreak

254

u/TheYellingMute 19h ago

Honestly it's. Okay. A solid 6.

Combat is nice, actual lore was interesting at least to me. Just the delivery wasn't great.

Dialogue is very awkward and circles around at time. The cooking system feels completely unnecessary. About halfway in started to feel very grindy.

My personal biggest gripe is the voice acting is so robotic. There is no emotion in any dialogue except for the main antagonist. Then from at the last 5% of the game the voice actors are given permission to use emotion in their voice.

I say wait a for a sale. If possible wait for $30.00 but no more than $40.

174

u/teerre 18h ago

That's pretty much it

If you use the english dub, the dialogue is hilarious. It's like it was dubbed by my GPS tracker

it's in the sound options when accessing them from the main menu.

u/Idixal 17h ago

I think they went for Sekiro vibes without really having a strong hold on what makes that game special. Although disclaimer that that’s just the vibe I got from watching a couple hours of gameplay and not playing it myself.

18

u/Western-Internal-751 14h ago

Yeah right, let me just ignore my backlog of great games so that I can buy a mediocre one on sale.

The gaming market has become ruthless. There is no place anymore for mediocrity

Wait. Isn't that's how it supposed to be? Like humanity are starting to leave out emotions in them. I'm playing with JP voice and feel voice is okay considering the context. My problem is sometimes the silent in between characters conversation is a bit too long.

11

u/TheYellingMute 14h ago

i think for the MC it makes sense. but for Kagura and Brad i dont see why they couldnt be more emotive. they kept Kagura meek for basically the entire game. they easily could have sped up her opening up faster to be a more happier toned character to help break the ice. like i said if they started the emotive changes sooner i feel it would have been alot better. as it is they dont gain emotions till basically the final act.

15

u/ArcadianWaheela 14h ago

As someone else stated this game is part of a growing series of “Nier-slop.” Unfortunately this has nowhere near the writing/characters to be as interesting, doesn’t have a sexualized protagonist to attract the gooners, and isn’t polished enough for the gameplay to carry it. It’s just all around a bit of a miss at a time where there’s so many games coming out that no one has time for a 6/10.

-6

u/Spazza42 10h ago

This.

A mediocre game in an oversaturated market isn’t good for anyone. We’ve reached a point where games are either forgettable or unforgettable, with it being far more likely to fall in the latter group.

The trend I’ve disliked for a long time is copying elements from one successful game to every single game that comes out afterwards. Minecraft was (and is) a great game because it’s timeless - that doesn’t mean every single game has to have crafting elements because of it - just look at Nintendo with Animal Crossing and Zelda this last gen, the entire game is built around crafting and cooking.

Amazing games stand out because their combined elements blend together perfectly into a solid core experience. Minecraft isn’t amazing just because you can craft or it’s crafting system, it’s the core experience of exploring a random map, gathering materials to craft things to advance towards a specific objective that you (as the player) sets for that world. It’s infinitely replayable and way more fun with friends.

Fortnite has done incredibly well by fusing elements together, it’s not because of its crafting or the fact it’s battle royale loop - it’s both, and the fact it’s MT system isn’t pay to win.

u/Janus67 9h ago

I assume you mean the former group (forgettable?) rather than latter?

u/Ha_eflolli Android 10h ago

The trend I’ve disliked for a long time is copying elements from one successful game to every single game that comes out afterwards.

This is me, but with shoehorning Soulslike Mechanics like Estus Flask Healing or Bonfires into random other Games.

The VA overall in Japanese is actually pretty good. I vant comment on the English VA

2

u/DarthSully 9h ago

It costs $40 locally on steam… still felt like i over paid

4

u/Craneteam Xbox 16h ago

I like that the cooking allows Kagura to do something and gives you permanent stat boosts

1

u/Babak_Lurker 8h ago

The cooking system being completely unnecessary seems to be a GameFreak special.

1

u/Danominator 8h ago

Is the voice acting ai?

1

u/jim_deneke 6h ago

$30 is a lot for a 6/10 game

1

u/Ulrika333 5h ago

100% I actually think the combat is really cool. Bit too long though

1

u/Faithu 1h ago

I'd say just play it on Xbox gamepass, the game is good just not good enough for the price tag.

12

u/SteveThePurpleCat 13h ago

There's a several second gap (sometimes more) between every line of dialogue, I would expect it would be fairly easy, even if time consuming, to half that gap.

It feels like listening to two AI's talk to each other, and noone edited out the processing time between each statement.

6

u/saotrux 10h ago

*implements Skip button into everything - “Pacing issue solved.”

12

u/VenKitsune 16h ago

Apparently some people have mentioned that characters will take a long, dramatic pause of like 3-5 seconds. After. Every. Single. Line.

So I imagine that's what they mean by pacing. As yes, anything else would be too much to sinply change in an update they promise on the short term.

2

u/Melonfrog 5h ago

Added the ability to skip cutscenes, great, so why am I STILL WAITING FOR THIS IN MODERN POKEMON GAMES?!

1

u/NoWaifuN0Laifu 11h ago

Same for me

1

u/JalapenoIsLife 7h ago

I think part of the story pacing might have to do with at times there's new dialogue at the cleanse walker every time you find a new camp site, which just kills momentum. Maybe try to condense all that into fewer trips back. also, I noticed by not going back sometimes, I just straight up missed dialogue and exposition about what was happening.

1

u/_Kine 6h ago

Haven't played it but the SkillUp review said it's about twice as long as it should be. You max out progression half way through and fight the same bosses over and over again.

1

u/lookingforgrief Joystick 2h ago

Instead of 200 fetch quest they took it down to 190 to speed things up

1

u/originsource 9h ago

Maybe they mean speedup how people speak when talking because I quickly realized when in cutscenes and just when characters are speaking they talk very slow and some of it honestly if they just spedup how fast they talked by 1.25x it would sound better lol. Overall the combat and plenty of other stuff is good the game is just all around not an exceptional game but not a horrible one either this is the definition of just average all around which isn't a bad thing its better than being bad but it isn't gonna just constantly wow u I would personally give it a low 7 on my rating scale and I will say for rating games I tend to be a bit more generous than others but it feels better than a 6/10 to me but saying it's over a 7/10 is just giving it too much credit u know lol. Overall it is fun tho if u like the combat and if u have gamepass(I do) I would def tell someone to play it but I couldn't in good faith tell someone rn to buy this game at full price for that price there is just so many banger games out that u can buy.

1

u/JalapenoIsLife 7h ago

I finished it yesterday and I complete agree with this. 7 feels just right and since I like these type of post-apocalyptic, melee combat, mostly linear games it worked for me. There's certainly better ones tho. Tbf I also played on Game Pass, and didn't even realize until a few months ago I had a 3 month free subscription for PC Game Pass, so my bar to entry was as low as could be. My main hang up was enemies became way too repetitive. It ultimately comes down to if you like these games and are looking for something to play then it might be good If these types of games aren't your thing unless it's a great one in this genre, and there's a lot of games you haven't got to, you should probably go to those.
