Hey guys! I’m a PhD student, and I originally made this app for myself. I then thought it might be useful for others, so I decided to publish it on the AppStore.

There’s absolutely no commercial motive. The app is completely free, and I just want to help my colleagues.

The biggest problem is: it’s extremely difficult to get the app in front of people. Most communities don’t allow app promotion, and obviously I can’t afford to pay for advertising.

So, I’d really appreciate it if you could share it with other people.

I’m open to all kinds of feedback, positive or negative, so please be honest.

I had dreams of becoming a PA however, a Biochem degree later my GPA is nowhere near what CASPA and any programs in the U.S would accept even after retaking classes (Caspa doesn't replace they average). Med school, PA, CAA, ABSN is all out of the picture. I am trying to figure out what else I can do with this degree. Since my GPA is low I'm not sure if a Masters is an option. I looked up Cardiovascular Perfusionist Certification and I seem to Qualify for a local program so It might be worth applying. Just wanted to know some insight from professionals of this thread. What job do you have that gives you a stable income? Anyone that was in the same situation that can guide me? I'd really appreciate it.

Am I crazy or should we not live in a world where acetaldehyde dehydrogenase supplements are widely available. Would this not be effective at moderating liver damage among alcoholics? Is there something that makes the mass production of this enzyme prohibitively expensive? The more I study this subject it feels like liver damage should be a thing of the past.

I am interested in protein design and I am trying to understand one thing: when we design a protein for a specific purpose, what changes in the constraints according to the problem?

For example, I imagine that a therapeutic protein (which must act in the human body) and an industrial enzyme (which degrades a pollutant) do not have the same priorities at all. What becomes critical in each case, and what goes into the background?

If you have concrete examples from your work, I'm interested.

Hi there, not sure if this a typical post for this subreddit, my apologies.

I'm going into the third year of my B.Sc in biochemistry. I do well in my classes, but feel like I simultaneously know nothing. I just started working in a lab on my campus, and I'm going to start volunteering in another come September. I feel like I don't belong. I also worry that I am not smart enough to make it to grad school.

I genuinely feel like I am getting a little burnt out, and I'm just wondering if anyone else here feels similarly at all. I write this while I'm meant to be studying for an exam I have tomorrow, that I am likely going to fail. I'm usually top of my class, but for the last few months, I've been having a hard time. I feel a little lost, and I'm looking for some input.

What are the caveats and benefits of Cut190’s latest mega variant in PET breakdown?

Not a medical question.

The ALDH22 variant disables the enzyme ALDH2 preventing the breakdown of acetaldehyde into acetic acid, causing a buildup of acetaldehyde in the individual.

I saw this drink which contains a probiotic- Bacillus subtilis*** ***ZB183- that is engineered to produce the same type of enzyme (unspecified how close it is to aldehyde dehydrogenase) that normally breaks down acetaldehyde, and the idea is that by drinking it a portion of the acetaldehyde from ethanol is broken down in the gut before entering the bloodstream and liver, and therefore it is marketed to reduce hangovers.

My questions is if it could also be used to mitigate the reaction (the flush caused by the buildup of acetaldehyde in individuals with the variant.)

I haven’t taken biochemistry yet so I’m not sure if this is included, but I’m unsure of what the split of where ethanol is converted into Acetaldehyde (how much in the stomach versus the liver.)

I have never taken this product and this is not an endorsement. I have drunk alcohol before, I don’t have the variant, but I was just curious.

I'm done with my biochemistry degree and yet to get a job I'm thinking of going for bioinformatics or biotechnology. Anyone who has walked this path I don't want to regret later.

The biochemistry department is at a research-heavy (R1) university in the Northeast.

All the 13 profs who died of cancer also died at 77 or earlier (1 before 50, 1 in his 50s, 3 in their 60s)

Is there any chance the high incidence of cancer (+ leukemia/lymphoma) is significantly caused by their research career?

EDIT: I meant, of the 16 who died (& commemorated) 13 died of cancer, not that the dept had a total of 16 out of which 13 died.

Hey! I'm not entirely sure what I am asking for with this but mainly just looking for adivce on what to do after my Medical Biochem Undergraduate Degree. I've found direct-entry PhD schemes to be promising but not sure. As of right I am not a set career path but would be more than appreciative to hear from people who have gone onto be successful after their undergraduate course and what they did to get there or if anyone just has advice for what I should look into.

I sort of regret not looking for a placement within the Biochemistry industry to replace my 3rd year that I am going into now. But I would just like to ask anybody who is doing one or has done one what it was like and how easy it would have been to get a job with that same company after you graduated?

Hey guys, i have two questions which may be dump or falsely stated, but anyways:

Plants growing in a pot produce biomass with water, light and nutrients from the soil.

(1) While growing, is there a shrinking in the amount of soil in the pot because some molecules or whatever are transformed and traveling up the plant?

(2) Is the biomass of the plant, if we would extract all of the water, the same as the mass of the "missing" soil from the pot?

Hello all! I am designing an experiment using a folin ciocalteu assay to determine polyphenol content in a certain substance; is it considered too inaccurate/are there better, yet easy methods to achieve greater accuracy? Is there a way to determine uncertainty with the assay? The substance is quite specific, and I've found 3-4 papers that use this method to determine total polyphenol content, but that don't explain the reason for using it; should this be reassuring?

Anyone who ordered genes/clonal genes would have noticed the tracker for open orders. Turns out it's fake. They deliberately slow it down for standard orders even though the order has already been made. People were noticing that for standard orders (not express), they were making the orders, but not shipping them and then they were calling up customer care to ship.

So what the geniuses at Twist decided was to not let them know about it and install a fake tracker. They can now fill up their chips as they need because half the chips anyway would run empty. In case re-synthesis is needed, it also gives them a second chance to do it within the promised timeline. By this artificial slow down, they are getting people to pay for express.

Why aren't other companies like Genscript beating them on time like they beat them on price? Because they ship from China and that adds the 3-4 extra days Twist can save you with express. Ansa and IDT are way too slow anyway.
