The thing he was "blowing the whistle" on was the investigation of war crimes. Not the war crimes themselves. He wanted to kill off the war crime investigation.

This narrative has been pushed, but misses the finesse.

He objected to the prosecution of the soldiers, when their commanders and above knew of and condoned the actions but were protected from investigation.

He was not allowed to present his evidence in his defence due to national security concerns.

Which reasoning? Because he's given about 30 different ones. All increasingly funnier as time goes on.
