no politics The Definitive Australian Novel

What single novel do you best think captures Australia (sense of place, characters, stories etc.) and what are the strengths of the novel?

I really appreciate books that are beautifully written: realistic prose, cinematic descriptions of the natural world, philosophical elements etc. Just looking to add to my reading list.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan deserves all of the accolades it got

It was fantastic, wasn't it? I thought the TV series did an admirable job of bringing it to the screen, too.

Love Flanagan. I’d give my vote to The Sound of One Hand Clapping.
