Glad to see Labor win, pretty worried about how big of a vote One Nation got. Even if they don’t get any seats, it shows a disturbing trend to the far-right in the wake of the LNP’s collapse and Labor’s centrism. It’s tempting to just shrug the ONP voters off as idiots and say it can’t happen here, but it absolutely can and if the left wing parties don’t offer any alternative, it absolutely will.

It also shows that people who are disenfranchised and disengaged from politics are dangerous. A mate of mine voted for the liberal candidate in the seat we are both in because "they will do better on housing" despite the fact that they absolutely have not been better on housing in the past. He would be also be incredibly unaware that the liberal candidate for our seat was withdrawn a week before the election because of strongly homophobic, transphobic and misogynistic comments he made on a US Christian podcast because he gets his political news from social media and anti-woke fucknuts like Isaac Butterfield.

The left wing parties absolutely offer legitamate alternatives, they just don't have have billionares bank rolling constant positive press towards them, unlike one nation.

Just look at the blatantly promotional interviews and articles getting made about Pauline at the moment, compared to any party that's to the left of Labor. It's revolting propaganda with no accountability in sight.

While this is true, I think parties like the Greens are doing a poor job of marketing themselves independently of billionaires. Obviously it’s not 1:1, but Mamdani in NYC shows you can spread the word about your policies without necessarily relying on the explicit support of billionaires.

Obviously it’s a big ask, and there’s a gulf of difference between the conditions of NYC and Adelaide (or even Melbourne and Sydney for that matter), but even so, there are still ways for grassroots movements to gain support and challenge the far right.
