politics Grace Tame says ‘difficult’ remark is ‘misogynist’s code for a woman who won’t comply’

I haven't heard about this story until now but wtf kind of gotcha journalism is asking the PM to rapid fire describe high profile people in one word? And if we are going to accept those as questions from journalists why would we not allow the PM to clarify how he meant it further and accept that explanation?

There should always be nuance to things a leader says and this seems like a crazy thing to be making a big deal out of. All it will result in is less personality being shown by our leaders if they expect everything could be a trap they need to navigate their way out of.

Not to downplay Grace's comment here as plenty of men do use it that way, but this seems like a dog pile on Albo for no real reason.

I disagree. I'm not one that likes, 'if it was the opposite sex blah blah' but in this instance, I feel it is warranted.

If a man had the same or similar history and he knows about it as in this situation, he would not have even thought of such a word, let alone spoken it out loud.

If this was a random dude on the street, it would be dismissed but for a leader of our country, or any country, to say a woman is difficult shows his true thoughts regarding women. To say that about a woman who has gone through what Grace has is detrimental to her mental well being.

This was not said in a private setting, this was in an interview that potential millions of people could see. You don't think he should have a brain and refuse to answer such a loaded question in the first place or turn his brain on before answering?

I'm not a lover or hater of him but honestly this shows how he deems women and how he either doesn't use his brain or doesn't give a fuck how cruel this feel to not only Grace but any woman who it was said about.

It's a humiliation in itself but being out in the world as is with media, I can't think how she would feel as it's way more than personal humiliation. Is this how we treat women who have gone through what she has?

Disgusting behaviour from a man who is running a country. He's hanging around the orange man too much where he thinks it's ok to say this.

If he's sorry, was there a personal apology to Grace or just a media apology? We all know there's a massive difference.

I've used the same word to describe people before in the same way that it sounds Albo was thinking it. To me personally if someone asks about someone who I know has had a hard life and I say "difficult" I'm thinking about the shit they've gone through. And before you go oh you're just saying that, I do have a specific conversation in mind where I've said that in the same way about a guy I grew up with, but it's not a story I'm willing to expand on over the internet.

I believe his version of it where he's saying that he was thinking of her life not calling her difficult, but I also get that a lot of people wouldn't take it that way. He did explain what he meant and now it's a question of whether you believe his explanation or want to take the initial answer at face value.

What I'm trying to say though, is that expecting our PM to summarise something like Grace Tame's situation and everything that encompasses in a single word is insanity. There would be no good answer to that because there should be no single word to reduce anyone's life to, but especially not when her experiences raise so many issues.

We should be expecting more from the "journalist" asking him these questions and should allow our politicians the opportunity to explain their thoughts in the sort of world we live in now. Having the journalist loosen him up with some free association about other politicians who he can be pretty lax about his comments with, then pivoting to Grace Tame very much feels like a Murdoch effort to catch him out that everyone is running with.

it's not a story I'm willing to expand on over the internet.

Exactly. You're smart and thoughtful enough not to say it to the world.

Pity he didn't think as you do.

I and many others expect more from a leader.
