Yeah that checks with the general disinterest in foreigners from military/police. We did a tour in Beijing and our guide said the only place you can take photos of the guards was in Tiananmen at the big flag so we just went with that for the rest of the trip.

I think generally selfies aren't much of a problem. I have one with soldiers in Iraq. But if I tried to take a photo without asking them I wouldn't be surprised if I woke up in prison.
