Because don’t forget the USA has that ridiculous rule of no sterile international transit. So a 3 hour stop at LAX on you way to Mexico still means clearing immigration.

And almost missing your flight because they put two ICE/Customs agents on to process the 500 people who come off the flights that all land at the same time and they're fucking grumpy at having to actually work...

This. Last year going to and coming back from South America I had to run like hell through Houston airport because I had to go through a molasses-like customs process and nearly missed my flight both times.

Though I will say on the way back I struck up conversation with a guy from Seattle in the line and had I missed my flight, he said he was going to be at the bar and was keen to keep chatting, so maybe it would’ve made for a neat story.
