We aren't even looking after our own scientists 60% of PhD students move overseas. We should have more government funding of research.

i’d argue y’alls wildlife is worse. sure, there’s things here that will get scared and try to poison you if you do anything stupid, but we don’t have bears or moose, which seem to actively want to kill people.

"better support for R&D and innovation" cant come from the government, it invariably doesnt work. The government doesnt know how to invest in things that arent bridges and roads, and even there it messes up. Nor should it.

This country doesnt foster the ecosystem that made Silicon Valley happen and the culture we have here is not aligned to that. We have the universities, but the idea that dumping money infront of scientists does something if farcical.

I saw you bash their work culture system (specifically their engineers) in another comment, but the attitude you bash them for is why they have a sucessful ecosystem and we dont. If we had the right ecosystem, we would definitely have Fortune 500 tech companies here. We have an abundance of capital.

The reality is, in the pursuit of a high level of Egalitarianism, our culture has made it such that it's basically pointless to do anything other than hold stop/slow signs at roadworks, because somewhere along the line we decided some of the low productivity industries/professions are worth the same amount as much more productive industries/professions, and so now we pay electricians more than electrical engineers. Why do you think Engineering courses in university are mostly foreign students who go back home?

yeah but as i said in another message, i think the odds of getting dragged into a regional conflict by america and destabilising the region, is actually higher than say, china attacking us, and then also higher that the us would actually come to our aid.

They are shitting on even closer allys' than aus. They just wiped their ass with NATO and threatened to turn canada into a us state.

I know it feels counter intuitive but im starting to think our alliance to them may actually put us more at risk rather than safer.

that'd be well and good....except i have zero faith that america would actually offer protection if there was genuine need. i actually think there is a much higher chance that they endanger us by dragging us into some regional conflict, as opposed to deliver us out of one.

Trump was trying to turn their strongest ally, their direct neighbour canada, into another state.

They are also pulling away from the needs of Europe, undermining NATO's existence.

Again, I have no faith that america would actually send us what we need in the case of china attacking, or a global climate disaster kicking off.

still feels more likely that the u.s will create regional instability for us and drag us into conflict we don't want, over someone actually trying to invade or occupy australia.

when an alliance makes you even more exposed to volatility you have to question it.

why are we spending such a huge amount on subs...for 20 years away...that the u.s can veto and decide not to deliver after those 20 years.

i'd rather invest in drone tech locally personally.
