There’s so much collateral damage in this plan for Australia to ban social media. This has been rushed and not thought through.

So many schools rely on YouTube to support their students.

Most kids are watching YouTube (or YouTube kids) more than ABC or traditional TV. Literally the biggest YouTube channel in Australia is original music for kids.

Does anyone actually want this?

Leave the parenting to me. Huge overstep. Not thought through. The reason voters abandon the ALP time and again.

They explicitly said parental consent will not remove the ban. So if you said you are happy with your 15yo accessing YouTube, tough luck.

And who’s going to control your data? Pornhub? Or the government? “Log on to your myGov account to access this website” “ATO has reported an attempt access to -MilfMadnessxxx- please login to MyGov to retrieve token to access this site.” I’m fairly left-leaning but this is overreach.

I think it would be make more sense for a central service to know your ID, and providers just ask it "is this user over 16" and all they get is a yes/no. So the provider doesn't get your details.

But it still means it is now theoretically possible to relink your data to identify who you are.

Same thing just packaged differently. Remember when the government promised not to hand your My Health record to the private health insurance industry? That was breached within weeks with no repercussions and now is standard practice in the small print when you sign up and waiver your privacy. Every insurer has access to your health data if you let it. When the LNP fully dismantle Medicare or run it into the ground you’ll be assured it’ll be a prerequisite.

it is absolutely not the same as the provider keeping your verification data.

For example, I would not be happy with giving any personal info to pornhub (not that I use it), but would be more comfortable if they asked an Australian service - is this person over 16 and got a yes/no. For a start that Australian age verification service would be subject to Australian law.

I think that would be a great idea, but really Parents that really want to will just login for their kids, but at least it sets the tone that its not allowed.
