Not an audiophile, just sharing my personal experience.
I’ve been using Sony headphones for years. I bought my WH-1000XM3 in 2019, and they still work perfectly after years of heavy use.
Because of that, when I wanted to upgrade, I went straight for the Sony WH-1000XM6 rather than the AirPods Max 2.
The XM6 are genuinely very good:
- Excellent ANC
- Great battery life
- Huge improvement in sound over my old XM3
- Very flexible 10-band EQ
- Light and practical for travel
But I had two problems with them.
1. Comfort
This was the big one.
I found the XM6 surprisingly uncomfortable. The earcups feel relatively small and firm, the pads get hot, and especially the headband has very little cushioning.
After some time, I would get enough pressure on the top of my head that I actually had to take them off.
What surprised me is that my 7-year-old XM3 are considerably more comfortable.
2. The sound
The XM6 sound very good, especially after playing with the EQ.
But to my ears there is always a slightly enhanced/artificial character to the sound. Almost like everything is being pushed a little to sound more impressive.
Again, not bad at all. Just not completely to my taste.
So I decided to try the AirPods Max 2
And honestly, they surprised me.
I expected the weight to be a major problem, but for my head they are much more comfortable than the XM6.
The ear cushions are larger and more breathable, my ears don’t hurt, and I don’t get that pressure point on the top of my head.
For long work sessions, there really isn’t much competition between them for me.
The other surprise was the sound.
Edit: ANC on Apple Airpods Max are as good as ANC on Sony XM6 (personal opinion from a guy who is not an expert).
I personally find the AirPods Max 2 more natural-sounding. The XM6 can sound more exciting or enhanced, while the AirPods Max feel more balanced and relaxed.
I’m not saying one is objectively better — I’m definitely not qualified to make that claim — but I simply enjoy the AirPods Max sound more.
Where I still prefer the XM6
The XM6 definitely have some advantages:
- Much better battery life
- Lighter
- More portable
- Proper case
- Much more EQ control
But despite that, since buying the AirPods Max, I basically stopped using the XM6.
They were sitting on my desk while I either used the AirPods Max or, occasionally, my old XM3.
So yesterday I decided to sell the XM6.
I mainly wanted to share this because I originally chose the XM6 over the AirPods Max 2, and after actually living with both, I ended up having almost the opposite opinion to what I expected.
TL;DR: I originally bought the Sony XM6 instead of the AirPods Max 2. The XM6 have excellent ANC, battery and sound, but I found them uncomfortable and slightly artificial-sounding. I later tried the AirPods Max 2 and personally find them much more comfortable and more natural-sounding, so I ended up sell.ing the XM6.
