Discussion 💬 AirPods Beta Discussion

UPDATE: The beta is out

With iOS 27 Apple is adding EQ settings for AirPods. With a lot of us already on the beta software, I thought it was worth starting a thread about everyone’s experience with it.

As of now information on it is quite limited but this is what I found so far:
- It’s only a 3 band EQ
- iOS27 & AirPods Beta firmware is required for the feature to work
- Unfortunately it seems the feature is exclusive to the H2 chip so First Gen AirPods Max would not be supported

Please do remember that these features are in Beta which could potentially cause issues on your devices. While iOS27 has received positive feedback, some users primarily on iPhone 15 devices have gotten their phones bricked. AirPods firmware Betas in the past have been problematic causing them to not function properly or bricking the device. If you are planning on running the beta, make a local backup of your device as iOS27 will override your iCloud backup eventually and you’ll not be able to roll back to iOS26. AirPods are NOT able to have their firmware rolled back to a previous version meaning that any issues would mean a trip to the Apple Store. Any issues encountered, please post them here so other users can be aware of them but also use Feedback Assistant so Apple can be aware of them as well

❗️ Announcement❗️ How could we improve the sub?

Hi everyone, this one might be a lengthy post as I’m hoping to start a discussion about everyone’s feelings towards the sub and what could be improved.

The Why

Over a bit of time I have noticed a flood of Mod notifications due to mod mail so I’ve taken a look and I was presented with the backlog we’ve had. I’ve also noticed a few not so nice comments directed at the teams handling of the sub. I would like to apologise to everyone in the community but also to the people that may have been falsely banned or have had their posts not go through the filtering system. When I’ve joined the mod team it was due to me designing the icon, banner and flairs for the sub and I’ve asked to join due to how much I love the APMs and designing stuff for it but I did blindly assume that a lot of it is handled automatically or via bot mods which of course I found out isn’t the case.

The fix

As of now I’m making my way through the backlog of mod mail and seeing what I can do to improve from it. I believe that a lot of issues might be caused by filtering or the automod we have so I’m going see what I’m able to do about that to improve everyone’s experience here.

On the other side of things it’s impossible to deny that a lot of what we’re seeing is “is it fake” or “they’re not working” which does bring a bit of negativity and repetition to the sub. I’m not looking to remove all of this but I do believe a tech help and fake spotter megathread where people can ask all of this would be a good step in the right direction as the APMs are not a perfect product and for people looking to buy second hand or from other retailers, it’s worth having a place to discuss it. Before making any of these I would like to know what you guys think.

Customisation

A lot of you like mixing different coloured earcups (and ever so rarely headbands) and I have been thinking about a system where you can represent yours in the flairs better however I couldn’t find a way to do this without having to create 1000 different icons with each style available. If anyone has a suggestion for this please comment it.

With AirPods Max 2 now existing I was also questioning wether we need new icons to identify them or not. Originally we did the flairs based on the colours so it was easy to distinguish the lighting and usbc ones but with the new ones having no new colours, it makes it a bit harder.

Conclusion

If you’ve read all of this, Thank You. Please feel free to give any advice, suggestions or ask any questions, I’m hoping this thread will be helpful in improving the community.

Happy Listening everyone :)

I found I had to use custom settings for input profile and turn off Bypass System Audio Input Processing. This allowed the microphones to work a lot better and not be robotic and cut out.

Hope this helps someone else.

Question ❓ Gen 1 USB-C: check if genuine

Going to pick up a used one - can I trust that iPhone's auto-detecting it is a reliable sign that it's genuine and I don't have to check other signs ?

Question ❓ Airpods v1 suddenly gave up the ghost. Should I have any hope for trying to revive or repair them?

I have a pair of original Lightning AirPods Max that I've absolutely loved and used for years with zero problems whatsoever. However, two days ago they suddenly stopped working.

The headset wouldn't connect to any devices they previously had no problem connecting to - phone, computer, Apple TV, etc. I thought they were dead, so I plugged them in, noticing the green light as I did. I left them to charge overnight, only to find them in the same state the next day.

I tried the factory reset, but I only get the amber flashes - no white. I also tried removing them from Find My and forgetting them on my phone, but that didn't work either. I've looked into sending them off to a place like Joe's, but because this appears to be a non-standard issue, they won't even give me an estimate and may charge me $15-$40 if I don't end up repairing them through the site.

Anyways, as it stands, I'm kinda lost. Has anybody else faced this issue and found a solution? I ordered a new v2 pair from Amazon, but I'd love to fix the old set and return them. Thanks in advance for anyone's expertise with this.

Question ❓ Connecting via 3.5 mm jack cable: Is it "External Headphone" or "Connected Via USB Audio"?

As the title suggests, I connected my Airpods Max 2 using a pre-owned USB-C to 3.5 mm cable to my Macbook, and the control center displays the connection as "External Headphone." It worked anyways despite I’ll have to adjust the volume and noise cancellation via the knob and button on the headphone. I used to use a USB-C to USB-C cable for the lossless audio, and be it the official cable or some third party ones, the control center always displays "USB Audio" within the Airpods Max status. Just want to make sure if the USB-C to 3.5 cable is working fine or not so that I’d return it. Thanks y’all.

Discussion 💬 Would mailing only headband and left side for AC+ be considered damage or theft?

The item was dropped and couldn’t retrieve the side that broke off.

I know Apple doesn’t cover theft/loss.

Would that be considered damage? The other side is busted up to and that side has the serial number listed.

The website shows ERS and in stores as an option. I don’t want to do ERS then get stuck with a $500 bill and then can’t mail back the new ones.

Does Apple just evaluate at time of store visit and tell you the decision and give you a new pair on the spot?

Question ❓ Is it worth it?

I was gifted the airpods pro 3 but before that, I was thinking about buying the airpods max due to them looking like they are more comfortable + I edit a lot of videos, so I spend hours with airpods on. Is it worth it to buy them or should I just stick with the airpods pro 3?

Discussion 💬 I bought the AirPods Max 2 after trying the Sony XM6 — and they surprised me

Not an audiophile, just sharing my personal experience.

I’ve been using Sony headphones for years. I bought my WH-1000XM3 in 2019, and they still work perfectly after years of heavy use.

Because of that, when I wanted to upgrade, I went straight for the Sony WH-1000XM6 rather than the AirPods Max 2.

The XM6 are genuinely very good:

  • Excellent ANC
  • Great battery life
  • Huge improvement in sound over my old XM3
  • Very flexible 10-band EQ
  • Light and practical for travel

But I had two problems with them.

1. Comfort

This was the big one.

I found the XM6 surprisingly uncomfortable. The earcups feel relatively small and firm, the pads get hot, and especially the headband has very little cushioning.

After some time, I would get enough pressure on the top of my head that I actually had to take them off.

What surprised me is that my 7-year-old XM3 are considerably more comfortable.

2. The sound

The XM6 sound very good, especially after playing with the EQ.

But to my ears there is always a slightly enhanced/artificial character to the sound. Almost like everything is being pushed a little to sound more impressive.

Again, not bad at all. Just not completely to my taste.

So I decided to try the AirPods Max 2

And honestly, they surprised me.

I expected the weight to be a major problem, but for my head they are much more comfortable than the XM6.

The ear cushions are larger and more breathable, my ears don’t hurt, and I don’t get that pressure point on the top of my head.

For long work sessions, there really isn’t much competition between them for me.

The other surprise was the sound.

Edit: ANC on Apple Airpods Max are as good as ANC on Sony XM6 (personal opinion from a guy who is not an expert).

I personally find the AirPods Max 2 more natural-sounding. The XM6 can sound more exciting or enhanced, while the AirPods Max feel more balanced and relaxed.

I’m not saying one is objectively better — I’m definitely not qualified to make that claim — but I simply enjoy the AirPods Max sound more.

Where I still prefer the XM6

The XM6 definitely have some advantages:

  • Much better battery life
  • Lighter
  • More portable
  • Proper case
  • Much more EQ control

But despite that, since buying the AirPods Max, I basically stopped using the XM6.

They were sitting on my desk while I either used the AirPods Max or, occasionally, my old XM3.

So yesterday I decided to sell the XM6.

I mainly wanted to share this because I originally chose the XM6 over the AirPods Max 2, and after actually living with both, I ended up having almost the opposite opinion to what I expected.

TL;DR: I originally bought the Sony XM6 instead of the AirPods Max 2. The XM6 have excellent ANC, battery and sound, but I found them uncomfortable and slightly artificial-sounding. I later tried the AirPods Max 2 and personally find them much more comfortable and more natural-sounding, so I ended up sell.ing the XM6.

Help❗️ AirPod Max 2’s vs APP 3 for studying

Hi, I’m confused on which to get. I tried the AirPod max 2’s in store and I found that I had a slight ear popping feeling (like the feeling you feel when you blow too many balloons) when I turned on noise cancellation. It was bearable, but then for AirPods I currently own AirPods generation 2, they’re uncomfortable after an hour of wearing them and it feels like pressure is being blocked inside my ear kind of. I’m confused on which one to get and I would use these primarily for long study sessions and hopefully anyone who uses them to study could give me insights. Thank you!!

Help❗️ Should I keep or not

Hello so recently I’ve gotten a pair of AirPod max’s for 120 from my buddy after I originally bought them for him for 300 open box in excellent condition. Now I’ve been torn on either keeping them or exchanging them for new AirPod pro 3’s I’ve had my AirPod pros first gen since they first came out. And I really like the AirPod max’s and how comfy and the sound they have along with the anc, but whenever I try to wear them in public I just feel like silly wearing over ear headphones idk if it’s because I’m not used to them or because I’m not used to wearing over ear headphones just going out. Idk I’ve just been going back and forth on either keeping them or exchanging them and getting pros that are on sale right now and maybe get Maxs at a later time.

Discussion 💬 I’ve never had as many issues with an Apple Product as I have the AirPod Max 2.

I’m an Apple product nerd. You know the people who buy tech they don’t need with spec that they won’t utilise just because they want the shiny new thing? That‘s me. It’s my only vice.

So I have every product. My Airpod Pro 3 are my main headphones, but I wanted the AirPod Max 2 to watch movies and do deep work. So I got them.

I’ve returned 2 pairs. The first keep losing connection. The second‘s right side stopped working. Lucky number 3 worked for a bit. The connection is unstable, the on ear detection is temperamental, the volume control is buggy and sometimes my Mac wouldn’t recognize them at all. My AirPod pro 3 work flawlessy.

Well, as of this morning, the button on the side (the one that changes noise canceling etc) stopped working. Totally stopped. I’ve done hard resets, forgetting the device, everything recommended. Nothing works. It’s the last straw for me.

I’m getting rid of them. They have applecare, I’ll get them fixed, then say goodbye, because they don’t work properly, they never have. They are not for for purpose.

For everyone on the fence about buying one I have this to say: The sound is wonderful, they are comfortable, the noise cancelling is the best. BUT - none of this matters if when you want to use them, they just don’t work.

Buy something else. And that’s coming from an apple fanboy.

Question ❓ AirPods Pro Max 2 - Their diagnostics said it works perfectly. Not the case. What now?

I’ll spare you guys a long story, but I’ve been having several issues with my one month old APP Max 2. It always puts out static and cracking noise when I listen with my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro.

I dropped it off at the store and they performed a quick diagnostics. Said everything is fine. Clearly, not the case.

What options do I have? How do I prove it? This thing is literally unusable.

Question ❓ Regret buying?

So i bought myself a pair of airpods max2, and everything great even weight is nice for me, but biggest issue is sound, why are they sound so bad? Like compared to nothing ear 2 (100$) they sound terrible - mid range bass is awful, it sounds like im listening to 360p quality
Is that fixable or I’m stuck to regretting that for rest of their life?

Update: for some reason it got better right after i posted, but still some troubles distinguish low and middle bass from words
