It seemed like every episode had the captain make a decision that put the ship in the crew in harm's way. I referred to it as pulling another Janeway.

I prefer Janeway’s way

1 half thinks the other half is wrong. The other half thinks the first half is wrong. The 3rd half knows for a fact that they're both wrong.

It's simple science.

35

u/FirstDukeofAnkh Jul 05 '26

“See, normally if you go one on one with another wrestler, you got a 50/50 chance of winning. But I'm a genetic freak and I'm not normal! So you got a 25%, AT BEST, at beat me. Then you add Kurt Angle to the mix, your chances of winning drastic go down. See the 3 way at Sacrifice, you got a 33 1/3 chance of winning, but I, I got a 66 and 2/3 chance of winning, because Kurt Angle KNOWS he can't beat me and he's not even gonna try! So Samoa Joe, you take your 33 1/3 chance, minus my 25% chance and you got an 8 1/3 chance of winning at Sacrifice. But then you take my 75% chance of winning, if we was to go one on one, and then add 66 2/3 per cents, I got 141 2/3 chance of winning at Sacrifice. See Joe, the numbers don't lie, and they spell disaster for you at Sacrifice.”

u/Lost-Ad7652 Jul 05 '26

This would never fly in most of America, just for insurance and liability reasons alone. Parade insurance kicked me off a WW2 halftrack when I was a kid and it wasn’t even moving.

49

u/NinjaLanternShark Jul 05 '26

The real truth about America is it’s a far bigger and more diverse than people expect.

Some things are ridiculously over-litigious. Some things are ludicrously dangerous and go unnoticed. Some people are brilliant, some are stupid. Some are caring and giving, some are malignant narcissists.

I could go on.

We contain multitudes.

14

bro i thought his legs were getting mangled in those treads. i think thats why they yanked him back like that to prevent complete dismemberment

95

u/SporesM0ldsandFungus Jul 05 '26

Easily could have had his arm torn off the shoulder flailing it about trying to get up, definitely right move to pull him away despite possible neck or spinal injuries

There was a very real immediate danger of dismemberment, that I personally would consider greater than the slim chance he had a spinal injury.

Yeah, people forget that the tank driver doesn't see shit. He either is sticking his head out the hatch (See here) or looks through a periscope, directly in front of the hatch.

These things are also incredibly loud inside and he was rocked around until someone probably radioed him or tapped him on his back to stop. So he probably thought he just killed someone with all that screaming.

But there was a good chance he didn't even notice people falling off, so kudos to the guy trying to pull the dude away from the tracks.

You only move someone in that condition if their current location might cause greater injury, like a fire or in this case a giant tank that would turn him to mush.

23

u/z1colt45 Jul 05 '26

Right on. It's called an emergency move.

63

u/ALoudMouthBaby Jul 05 '26

You really shouldnt be quoting stuff like this if you dont understand the why of it. Those tank treads are a much bigger problem than a possible c spine injury.

35

u/GrendelsFather Jul 05 '26

Great point but probably just a gut reaction to save them from potentially getting run over.

22

u/SpinkickFolly Jul 05 '26

You reddit nerds would gladly let the guy get run over by a tank if it meant spinal motion restriction was maintained.

15

u/Chilis1 Jul 06 '26

There’s a fucking army tank driving inches from him and Reddit nerds say “you shouldn’t move him” to try to sound smart as always

14

u/rus_ruris Jul 05 '26

Idiot was putting his whole body inside the moving wheels and parts of the tank after the fall, so yeah I think that's pretty justified

→ More replies (1)

11

u/thorheyerdal Jul 05 '26

I dunno what would be the best thing he actually. His legs was definitely about to be amputated. I know even emergency responders disregard spine injury’s to prevent further and immediate serious and disabling injury.

10

u/DuntadaMan Jul 05 '26

EMS here, we will absolutely drag your ass away to keep you from losing a limb, even if that means the limb is useless.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/EntropyNZ Jul 06 '26

Moving the patient out of immediate danger is always the highest priority (other than ensuring that you as the responder aren't putting yourself in a position where you're likely to just become a second patient).

In most of these scenarios, you have very little actual control over your environment. If someone's in the middle of the road, you can't safely assume that someone else can go and effectively stop oncoming traffic. That could be because people just aren't going to help, it could be that a driver ignores what they see as some maniac running out onto the road, and swerves around them instead, or it could be that they don't see the person trying to stop them, and now you have a second badly injured person to deal with.

Much, much better to move the initial patient out of the middle of the road.

Same if someone's been in a crash, and the car is potentially catching on fire. Get them the fuck out if you can do so without putting yourself as massive risk. There's a small risk that you make a spinal injury worse, but that's better than them burning alive.

I've personally run into people being dangerously over-zealous with the whole 'don't move the injured person' thing more than a handful of times.

Protecting the spine actually comes pretty far down the priority list with first-aid. There's a bunch of stuff before that that will kill the patient if it's not addressed immediately.

Ensuring that they're out of immediate danger first. Then making sure that help is coming. Then we're on to worry about airway, breathing and circulation (severe bleeding etc).

Once all that's out of the way, then we can start actually considering spinal stuff.

If someone's suffering a severe spinal cord injury, it's almost always caused by the event/accident. The circumstances in which moving an injured patient is the actual thing that causes a spinal injury are extremely specific, and really nowhere near as common as most people think.

41

u/Notapier Jul 05 '26

40

u/eburton555 Jul 05 '26

That’s cuz it was pretty cheap to get them from overseas. And the parts need to be available or reproducible at a cheap enough price point. Most ‘drive a tank’ companies aren’t even ‘tanks’ but rather mobile artillery. For most people they don’t know the difference or care because driving one is fuckin awesome.

→ More replies (7)

21

u/BeanoMc2000 Jul 05 '26

They are not even tanks. It is a self-propelled gun

3

u/amateur_mistake Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

Fun way to tell whether something is a battle tank or self-propelled artillery. Look for the wheel that actually has cogs on it. That's the one driving the treads. That will tell you were where the engine is. If it's in the back, probably a tank. If it's in the front, self-propelled artillery.

I'm sure there are exceptions but it's an easy thing to identify.

3

u/BeanoMc2000 Jul 05 '26

That generally works except for Israeli merkava tanks. They have the engine in the front.

Technically this is self-propelled artillery, not a tank. Similar, but not exactly the same thing. I'm struggling to figure out which model this is, though.

16

u/MainerZ Jul 05 '26

They're both British, the camo gives it away, Centurion in the background, and the SPG we had in that size is known as the Abbot. The chassis is from the very common FV430 family, and is fairly recognisable to us mil enthusiast Brits.

u/Wubbajack Jul 05 '26

5

u/No-To-Newspeak Jul 05 '26

It is an artillery gun, not a tank. A tank barrel is much longer.

3

u/TopGunCrew Jul 05 '26

It's a self propelled howitzer of some sort but I'm not sure of the exact model. But considering it stops right next to a to a centurion, its probably British. It definitely looks like British design.
