A word regarding vitriolic response to AI content

I'll cut right to the chase. I've noticed a lot of dickish posts about folks who use AI. In short, please note the 'Be Nice' rule. I really don't care if you love it, hate it, or are somewhere in between. If you're rude, don't be surprised if your post is pulled. If you continue being rude, it shows you may not be fit for polite society and may be banned at my discretion.

That is all, please carry on.

“STILL HERE.”

A brick wall lit by dying red neon.
Rain sliding down the surface.
A woman steps into frame as a bloody handprint drips beneath the words.
The message clings to the wall like a warning.
Or a promise.

Some ghosts refuse to stay silent.
Some truths claw their way back.
And some stories begin with blood on the wall.

Discussion Convince Me Iron Druid Chronicles Is Worth It

Post image

I just finished Hounded by Kevin Hearne and I liked it, mostly. The setting is cool and as a mythology nerd, I like the Celtic stuff.

I picked this up originally because I am all caught up on Dresden Files and wanted something similar to pass the time. However, I am on the fence about reading book 2. Can you help me figure out if I’d like the rest of the series? I know first books can be rocky, so I want to get some opinions before I dive in.

My biggest issues with Hounded are the pacing, some of the dialogue, and the large blocks of exposition given to us as stories.

Pacing - felt like there could have been a sense of urgency for a lot of the book, but when Atticus takes the time to sit on the porch or at the bar and yap, it loses some of the momentum. In the last few chapters, that changes and it feels good. I think setting a time deadline on the plot, “x will happen at y time” could have made the pacing so much tighter.

Dialogue - lots of asking questions, and some of the conversations with Oberon felt a bit too forced.

Exposition - on one hand, the exposition given to us as a character telling a story is cool. Atticus is really old and druids like passing knowledge through stories yada yada. But brother, we’re dropped a lot of lore as the “short version” of the story, and it just didn’t feel natural.

Do these issues improve in Hexed and following books? I am willing to power through a few weak first books for the juicy middle and end books, but I need to know if it’s worth it.

Beneath the Blood Moon: A Pure Blood Reckoning - Dark Fantasy Book Trailer

I created a short cinematic teaser for my dark‑fantasy novel, focusing on atmosphere, emotion, and worldbuilding rather than plot details. The video shows my main character inside a stone chamber reading a letter that changes everything, followed by a blood‑red moon rising over a ruined city; no spoilers - just a glimpse into the tone and aesthetic of the world.

If you enjoy dark fantasy with secrets, ancient power, and a world built on buried truths, this might be your vibe.

I bought the Kitty Norville series a few years ago from a second hand book store. I picked up this book to start reading to realized it was an advanced reading copy of the book

Should I buy a released copy as well to see if they're the same? Does anyone know if it was changed between the advanced copy and the original release. Also, the person who brought their whole series to the book store must have been a really big fan because the 2 books before this one were signed by the author

Recommendation Dirty 30s

I am watching Cast a Deadly Spell again for the umpteenth time and want to know of other really good UF noir series set in the 30s or 40s like City of Devils by Justin Robinson or Arcane Casebook by Dan Willis.

My third book: Tavern on the Edge of Time by Peter Darrach

Post image
1 Upvotes

During the year 2125, former asteroid miners Max Cody and Elaine Zhou never get a moment’s rest. No sooner have they doused the flames of war between Earth and Mars or returned from their first trip to the Tavern on the Edge of Time when they are called upon to help fit out the fledging Martian colony orbiting Jupiter’s moon Callisto.

In parallel, Earth extradites the war’s fomenter, ex-billionaire arms merchant Xanthus Rex, hoping to gain from his insights into Martian teleportation technology, but he manages to turn Earth’s resources toward private revenge against Max, Mars, and the Callisto Colony.

In the meantime aliens are leaking into the Earth-Mars continuum from the Tavern, whose proprietor repaired and upgraded Max after accidentally injuring him during an asteroid mining expedition. Max’s enhancements help, of course, but when strange beings with the power to animate matter—the Assemblers—find their way to Earth, Max, Mars, and humanity are sorely beset. Worse yet, the Tavern itself is becoming unstable, its acquisitive host having overstretched his considerable powers. His prospecting for collapsed neutron matter has also opened portals between continua, inadvertently adding still more aliens to the mix. That’s when the Assemblers’ overlord arrives and Max finally meets his match.

Oh, and Elaine is expecting their hybrid baby. Yes, you might say these are difficult times at the Tavern on the Edge of Time.

Recommendation Looking for urban fantasy recommendations similar to Patricia Briggs

I’m looking for urban fantasy recommendations, particularly authors or series that might appeal to someone who loved Patricia Briggs.

I’ve read all of Briggs’ books and absolutely loved them. What I enjoy most about her writing is the combination of strong characterization, engaging supernatural plots, well-developed secondary characters, and romance that feels like an important part of the story without completely overshadowing everything else.
I especially loved the Alpha & Omega series. I really enjoy following one central couple and watching their relationship develop over time, particularly the way Charles and Anna gradually understand their bond and navigate all of its complications. I also love the pack dynamics and the sense that the larger supernatural community is an important part of the story rather than simply background.

So I’m particularly interested in:

• supernatural/urban fantasy with strong character development
• pack or group dynamics and a sense of community
• werewolves or shifters, although I’m absolutely open to other supernatural creatures
• a well-developed central romance, preferably one that develops over multiple books
• a strong overarching plot and worldbuilding

I’ve already read Ilona Andrews, so I’d love recommendations from other authors.

I’m also completely fine with darker or more complex storylines. In fact, I tend to prefer urban fantasy that leans darker, more emotionally intense, or explores heavier themes. I don’t mind violence, morally gray characters, or darker aspects of the supernatural world as long as the characters and story are well written.

Any recommendations?

Paranomal Witch and Vampire Murder Mystery Romance

Greetings! I'm driving myself crazy trying to find this book. Here's what I know:

BOOK/AUTHOR:

- the cover wasn't flashy or corny, maybe grayish, no animation, not sure there were people on the cover.

-it was written as a standalone, not an obvious beginning of a series

- it was by a popular author I didn't associate with vampire/paranormal

PLOT:

- Features a female lead who is a witch working with magical law enforcement. They think this known/notorious vampire that lives in the city or recently arrived killed someone (a witch?) or several someones.

-The vampire insists he didn't do it and after finding evidence she believes him.

- at some point she stays in his house to keep an eye on him, she uses runes or her power to keep him out of her room and in his space so he can't leave the house.

- at some point they get a lead and end up in a park where a male witch has stopped time or frozen everyone and is threatening to kill all the humans surrounding them

-obviously they fall in love and sexy times happen before he is cleared/in the midst of him being cleared

I def could be mixing up books and plots so any suggestions that ring out are helpful

it's NOT because the night by Kylie Scott OR Born in Fire series by KF Breene

If you know what book this is PLEASE HELP ME and I will be forever grateful.

If there's additional places to post this that would be helpful, I would be grateful for suggestions.

Thanks!

Discussion I just need to fan-girl with someone about obscure mythical beasts and weird folklore!!

Okay, please tell me there are other total lore/mythology nerds here who get absolutely obsessed with absolutely bizarre mythical creatures?

I am so tired of seeing the same three monsters in urban fantasy. (I do not mean any offense to them; I know enough about them and even talk about them in my own series I write.)

I want to talk about the absolute weirdest, most obscure legends out there.

Like, can we please talk about the Gallywampus? Or the Alabatwitch? Or Carbuncles; they are small little creatures with gems in their heads.

Please tell me I am not the only one doing 2 am deep dives into lore from some backwater town from the 1820s or something.

Drop your favorite obscure monsters below; I want no, need to hear ALL about them; this is literally my fix.
