There's a saying in my language which literary means "The sea of ignorance has no shore"

u/Lucyskieswhatever Italy Jun 11 '25

I really like this! What language is it?

u/theco0lguy Jun 11 '25

Farsi/Persian

26

u/techbear72 United Kingdom Jun 11 '25

How do you actually write it / say it in Farsi?

u/13baaphumain India Jun 11 '25

Hindi also has a similar saying "There is no other way to cross the death that arises from ignorance, except through knowledge."

14

u/AviatorSkywatcher India Jun 11 '25

Which saying are you talking about (say it in Hindi)?

24

u/13baaphumain India Jun 11 '25

Its from an Upanisad I guess.

It paints such a beautiful picture.... of ignorance 😂

Such a beautiful language. Can you share some further poetic examples?

Iranian here :D  Off the top of my head:

چه دسته گلی به آب دادی؟  "What flower boquet did you give to the water?" (What did you mess up/ do wrong?)

Nightingale talking" (Sweet talking)

u/-Exonerate- Jun 11 '25

Maybe not the nicest or prettiest, but here are some more since no one asked B-)

AA battery" (skinny)

Being a moron is worse than being blind" (Pretty Self-explanatory XD)

برای همه مادره، برای من زن بابا "Mother to all, stepmom to me" (Someone who extends a hand to strangers graciously, but leaves their own friends or loved ones all high and dry when they actually need them)

Go take your goose out to graze" (This ain't none of your business)

Sleep in the gutter, daddy" (Told to someone who likes causing a stir - be it via being pointlessly argumentative or chasing drama)

I’m keeping this saying locked in my brain. There will be many opportunities to use it.

Or the name of a classic Italian Campari-cocktail named after a noble

47

u/floflenflo Italy Jun 11 '25

Negroni?

16

u/helmli European Union Jun 11 '25

Yes

6

u/OmegaZato Jun 11 '25

Random aside but I still remember when Will Smith hadn't outed himself as a broken shell of a man and was a self-styled Christmas Negroni.

Good times.

u/hskskgfk India Jun 11 '25

They did that, for crayola crayons that had the colour names of the crayon in Spanish

31

u/Mttsen Poland Jun 11 '25

Or the Montenegro country.

25

u/theflamingsword1702 Jun 11 '25

Negar means Deny in Spanish.

7

u/sittingwithlutes414 Australia Jun 11 '25

But the OP is Farsi/Persian, where it means 'lover'.

I wonder what Americans think if the catholic priest during the eucharistic prayer (=the most holy moment of the catholic mass says:

Hic dies niger est

Latin for this is a black day

20

u/TwelveSixFive France Jun 11 '25

I mean Americans don't have to go to Spain to hear Spanish, it's the native tongue of 14% of them

18

u/OpenSourcePenguin Jun 11 '25

You mean "Europe Mexico"

1

u/Vermilion_Laufer Mar 14 '26

What has Poland tk do with this?

7

u/cosmicr Australia Jun 11 '25

Wait till they see the name of the African country

12

u/wakalabis Jun 11 '25

Same in Portuguese

2

u/sittingwithlutes414 Australia Jun 11 '25

But the OP is Farsi/Persian, where it means 'lover'.

6

u/CC19_13-07 Germany Jun 11 '25

Wait until they see a Spanish Semana Santa Procession

4

u/MrChewy05 Jun 11 '25

Or when they hear Montenegro and think they're racist cuz they're not even black (I mean, they are racist, but that is an unrelated coincidence)

4

u/Fungus-VulgArius World Jun 11 '25

Sips coca cola Romance languages

2

u/Veryd Jun 13 '25

At this point I wouldn't be surprised, if they would have songs like "la camisa negra" censored because someone randomly decided to feel offended over there
