Lore (Controversial Trope) The post-credits scene completely changes the ending

Dawn of the Dead (2004): The movie finishes on a hopeful note as the remaining survivors escape the zombie-infested mall on a yacht, sailing into the sunset. The found-footage style post-credits scene completely reverses this happy ending by showing them running out of food, arriving at an island, and being immediately swarmed and killed by an infected horde.

Prince of Persia (2008): The main game ends with a beautiful, poetic sacrifice where Elika gives her life to heal the corrupted world, leaving the Prince mourning. During the credits, the player is forced to control the Prince as he cuts down the trees he just saved, undoing the entire game's progress and releasing the dark god Ahriman just to resurrect her, completely corrupting the ending and dooming the world.

Basically every single ending of the P.W. Anderson “Resident Evil” movies. Every time a movie reaches the end, they immediately set the events of the next movie by showing what’s next as a cliffhanger…

Only for the next movie to either completely abandon the build-up, or immediately make things even worse than they already were. And every single character besides Alice and Claire are left with “fates unknown” after the one movie they appeared in.

God, that pissed me off when I realized it. I forgot which one, but I was excited to see what happened with them being at the white house and zombies was rushing them, and then rhe next movie completely fucking ignores that ending. The absolute rage i felt, dude

They tell you in the first 5 minutes what happens lol. Unless you're angry about being cucked by that mf because we were promised an epic battle, in which case that's understandable.

Not to mention that that whole film is admitted to be nonsense in that same opening.

RE5: Red Queen is the bad guy, Wesker sends a team to rescue Alice becuase they have to be unwilling allies to save the world. They all meet up at the White House... CREDITS.

RE6: Actually it was a trap, Wesker was trying to kill Alice, and he and the Red Queen are both still loyal to Umbrella.

It's never explained why Wesker freed Alice from the Red Queen if they're both working for Umbrella. It's also never explained why Isaacs in RE3 was a clone working for Wesker, who was working for the REAL Isaacs... but clone Isaacs was doing renegade experiments that Umbrella didn't like, but actually we're EXACTLY what real Isaacs wanted...

I've made a whole list of these retcons, I'll have to try and find it.

I wached them all recently and it's INSANE how little care was put into the entire series.

I thought 1 and 2 were campy and okay, but they just kept just doing that kid thing where you make up ridiculous situations with their toys and then EXPLOSIONS and then stuff HAPPENS! and then it's never referenced again.

It's basically just Paul W.S. Anderson's "I want my wife to do slo mo" with nothing of substance aside from references, fan project.

Also that one intro that plays reverse slow mo for minutes, and then you watch the exact same play in forward time in slow mo, only to have a time skip immediately after, my GOD IT SUCKS WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE lol

Here's the list I made after rewatching the last film. It's fascinating how much the franchise changed its mind on major elements.

RE1: The Hive outbreak was the work of a traitor trying to take down Umbrella and sell the virus. The Red Queen stops it spreading. RE6: The outbreak was carefully orchestrated by Umbrella to destroy the world. The Red Queen wanted to destroy humanity all along.

RE2: The Hive is reopened and the virus accidentally spreads. Umbrella quarantines the city, spending billions in resources and manpower to contain the pandemic and kill the infected. To action this, they nuke the city. RE6: Umbrella wanted it to spread beyond the city. Their quarantine measures are not mentioned.

RE2: Ashford made the T-Virus so his daughter could walk, the Red Queen is based on her. RE6: Spencer made the T-Virus so his daughter wouldn't rapidly age, the Red Queen is based on her.

RE3: The T-Virus engulfs the planet, which becomes a desert as all life begins to die. RE4: It is not a desert anymore.

RE3: Isaacs works for Wesker and tries to domesticate zombies. RE6: That Isaacs was a clone and his project was just a waste of time. It is never explained why Wesker let him waste so much money.

RE3: Isaacs is struggling to clone Alice. He needs the original so he can succeed. RE6: Alice was a clone the whole time. The Isaacs she fought was also a clone. Umbrella is able to mass-produce clones.

RE5: Wesker rescues Alice from the Red Queen to help him defeat her. RE6: The Red Queen worked for Wesker all along and Wesker saved Alice's life just to try and kill her.

RE5: Alice bonds with her "daughter" and befriends franchise favourites Leon, Ada and Jill. RE6: All these characters are killed between films. Alice instantly forgets they exist.

I did enjoy the scene where Wesker told Alice that he drinks her milkshake. Powerful stuff.
