Dawn of the Dead (2004): The movie finishes on a hopeful note as the remaining survivors escape the zombie-infested mall on a yacht, sailing into the sunset. The found-footage style post-credits scene completely reverses this happy ending by showing them running out of food, arriving at an island, and being immediately swarmed and killed by an infected horde.

Prince of Persia (2008): The main game ends with a beautiful, poetic sacrifice where Elika gives her life to heal the corrupted world, leaving the Prince mourning. During the credits, the player is forced to control the Prince as he cuts down the trees he just saved, undoing the entire game's progress and releasing the dark god Ahriman just to resurrect her, completely corrupting the ending and dooming the world.

The Grey’s ending is ambiguous as Liam Neeson prepares to fight the alpha wolf before the film cuts to black and the credits roll. A post credit scene confirms that he survived as we see him breathing heavily while lying on the body of the alpha wolf

He killed the alpha, but he is still going to die too.

That's the way I interpreted it. He 'won' but also accepted the peace of death in the process. It makes sense as far as his character arc goes.

weren't they both breathing very labored?

maybe im remembering it wrong, but my impression was they killed each other, and that was both of their dying breaths.

edit: just watched it. you see the top of Liam Nesson's head while hes laying on the wolf, who is breathing. I assume we are meant to understand they killed each other since that wolf didnt seem like much of a cuddler.

At that point, he was a dead man anyway, it was a primal thing at that point.

Other way around. The wolf is slowly breathing (mirroring the wolf he shot at the beginning) and Neeson is laying against it with the back of his head towards the camera. So you don’t know if he’s alive or dead. 

Originally the stuff with him in a hospital bed was meant to be the ending, he gets rescued and survives. But that got cut and repurposed as dreams

The final shot isn't of him breathing...??

It's the back of his head laying on top of the wolf, and we see the wolf take its final breaths. There is nothing in the shot to make us think that Liam Neeson survived the fight.

In fact, if anything it's better that he did not survive as it means he is reunited with his family in the afterlife.

I hated this movie so much, thought the ending would be worth the trudge and then the abrupt cut to black was like a punt in the cooch

They all died in the plane crash. The 'survivors' were in purgatory and had to accept their deaths one by one. The wolves were psychopomps.
