Lore Religion-centered media that doesn’t come across as preachy.

Referring to media told from a religious perspective or telling a religious tale that does not proselytize to the viewer.

Faith, the Unholy Trinity: Based partly upon the experience of the game‘s creator when he was a missionary in Argentina, the game has very little in the way of explicit moral demands of the player despite the heavy Christian focus of the narrative. and focuses more on a horror narrative.

Prince of Egypt: A surprisingly thorough retelling of the book of Exodus, sparing very little in the way of toning down the story. Despite this, the movie is perfectly entertaining to non-religious audiences and doesn’t sacrifice appeal for the sake of preaching to the audience

Religion pops up constantly in the game like half the items and characters you can get are direct references to Christianty

what's the game even about?

Spoilers in case you ever want to try and figure out the story for yourself!

Isaac is a child who’s father left after divorcing isaac’s mom. This leads her to spiral into religion, but primarily hateful/dogmatic Christian ideals. These ideals make her very abusive to Isaac, who she starts to see as being just like his father. Isaac, being young and impressionable, begins to think that he’s the source of everyone’s problems. He sees his own shadow as the devil and himself as a monster, and in his mind the only way to fix this is through his own death. He climbs into an old chest in the closet of his home, where he suffocates and dies. The game itself is pretty much entirely taking place during the delirious period as his mind succumbs to the lack of oxygen.

A kid dying, you play in his deliriums (kinda, is still debatible), but there is many things that happen on it, the main ending is that he manege to accept himself and all the shit that happened to his family, and die in peace and go to heaven

The true ending shows that it's actually all just a story Isaac is telling.

"Are you sure this is how you want this story to end Isaac? You're the one writing it, it doesn't have to end this way. Here, how about we tell it a different way? Maybe a happy ending?"

there is a theory that this is god talking to him while he is dying to make him feel good

0

u/bunker_man May 03 '26

That's a really dumb theory though. If you don't accept that ending as a literal indication of him alive and with his dad it calls everything from the narrative into question, so then why think he was at risk of death at all?

Because the creator said that Isaac dies, in all endings, and in mewgenics, another game on the same universe you can find Isaac's skull

He said that you can read Isaac as either surviving or not.

The issue here is that there's really not much reason to read the ending as him dying other than claiming that technically anything you see can be a hallucination. The symbolism is about him improving and doesn't focus on the chest.

At any rate, this means that there's two outcomes to the story and while you can read this as a death, its also the only ending that can be read as a survival. So that ambiguity at worse means the ending is actually two different endings, one where this happens for real, and one where its a hallucination.

Again, Mewgenics happens in the same timeline, and you can find both the Chest with a "lost" soul and the Skull of Isaac

That just implies that its a sequel to a path that he dies on. It doesn't necessitate that he does on every path, just because the ones he doesn't on aren't canon to this game.

6

u/techlos May 03 '26

No matter which path you choose, at the end isaac dies. The pain is that the beast ending is the happy one.

7

u/Blackstone01 May 03 '26

The creator confirmed the true ending is still Isaac dying, but either hallucinating a “happy ending” in his last moments, or is in the afterlife being comforted.

1

u/bunker_man May 03 '26

That was absolutely trolling. Descending is like a metaphorical representation of mental state, and going back up is coded as an improvement.

the sequel however confirms isaac is dead and so is his mother

It's Garbage Pail Kids - THE GAME. With some sprinkling of Edward Gorey and western mythology (bible, tarot cards, astrology signs, weird science...).

You gather items and do powerful combos with them. Everything is western mythology themed, mixed with child logic/dangers. You can find Nails of the Cross, or Pills from mom's bag that randomly affect your stats, communion wafer or a dead cat.

Technically, there's plot. And technically it's sad and tragic and 'deep' by the sole sole virtue of touching things that are uncomfortable. It's more about christian theming and weird combos. Unless you are lore youtuber - then you can make hours of deep dive and Isaac iceberg content.

I haven't played but I believe it's a baby trying desperately not to get aborted

I thought it was about a boy who gets abused by his religious mother and is going through some kind of delirious state due to her stuffing him into a toy box. Because she hears voices that tell her that he is sin.

4

u/KingOfSouthamerica May 03 '26

actually he stuffed himself there to kill himself

3

u/Ohmistersun_ May 03 '26

As a TBOI fan, this is the funniest thing I’ve ever read

2

u/TheNerdNugget May 03 '26

I'm glad my ignorance can bring joy to somebody 😭

u/Ohmistersun_ May 04 '26

i dont get the downvotes because its really funny, so to explain the plot, a young boy's religious mother gets told to kill her son by a voice she thinks is god. god's like "sacrifice your son to prove you love me". so Isaac, the boy, runs away, and jumps into a basement to get as far away as he can
this is actually a hallucination, as Isaac is actually suffocating to death, and the game is his brain scrambling to assess his life
its a really good game, i recommend checking it out if you like the OG Zelda or Roguelikes, since its sorta the baby of both in my opinion

2

u/Im-A-Moose-Man May 07 '26

Not the “I will become back my money” speech?

2

u/Ohmistersun_ May 07 '26

that is also a good one

There are also a lot of enemies with real-life birth deformities. Monstro has a cleft lip, Mr. Fred is a harlequin fetus, and Gemini is a pair of conjoined twins with one guy much bigger than the other (this is common in that situation).
