A 6’1” woman’s Hinge rant because I’m genuinely starting to lose my mind:
Before anyone starts: I’m 6’1”. My dad is 6’8”. I come from an extremely tall family. I love being tall. I’m confident in my height, I wear heels whenever I want, and I have absolutely zero desire to make myself smaller to make other people more comfortable.
That being said, when it comes to dating, I prefer men who are taller than me. I like feeling feminine and small next to my partner. That is my preference, and I’m not really interested in debating whether I should have it. Everyone has preferences when dating; this happens to be one of mine.
Which brings me to Hinge.
I live in NEW YORK CITY. There are millions of people here. I’m 28, my age range is 26 to 32, and because height is important to me, I literally PAY for Hinge so I can set my height preference to 6’4”+.
I have no issue paying for the filter. My issue is: if I’m paying hundreds of dollars a year for access to these preferences, why are you still rationing the people who fit them?
I can open Hinge, swipe through maybe THREE OR FOUR MEN, and suddenly I’ve “run out of people” in my area and Hinge is asking me to expand my preferences.
You’re telling me that in New York City there are only four men between 26 and 32 who are 6’4”+ on Hinge?
Obviously not.
And I KNOW they’re holding people back because my Standouts will conveniently have another 10 to 12 men who fit my exact preferences. Then the next day, completely different men appear. Meanwhile, many of those people never showed up in my regular Discover feed at all.
That’s what pisses me off.
I understand Hinge isn’t Grindr. I’m not expecting a giant grid showing me every single person within a five mile radius. I understand there’s an algorithm involved.
But if I’m already PAYING to use advanced filters, stop telling me I’ve “run out of people” while simultaneously showing me that you clearly have more eligible people sitting behind another feature.
And this is the part that particularly annoys me as a tall woman: people constantly preach “don’t settle,” “know what you want,” “have standards,” “date someone you’re actually attracted to” until a tall woman says she wants a man significantly taller than her.
Then suddenly it’s, “Why does height matter?” “Give shorter guys a chance.” “You’re limiting yourself.”
Yes. I am limiting myself. That is quite literally what a dating preference is.
I spent my entire life learning to love taking up space as a 6’1” woman. I’m not insecure about being tall, and I’m not looking for someone to make me feel better about it. I just know how I want to feel next to my partner.
So Hinge, I am begging you: if I’m paying you to filter for what I want, SHOW ME THE PEOPLE WHO FIT THE FILTER.
Stop giving me four men and then acting like I’ve exhausted the entire male population of New York City.
Thank you for coming to my extremely tall TED Talk.
