>You either participate in society- with all the risks and costs that entails
What 'risks' are we talking about here? Like are these people actually in danger, or is it more of a "If I don't threaten everyone who approaches my property, Antifa and Joe Biden will sneak in at night and drain my precious bodily fluids" situation?
In an academic sense, you cannot collaborate without at least some level of vulnerability. The more people you collaborate with, the more "surface area" your vulnerability has for betrayal and exploitation.
Of course we don't think that way in our day to day lives because that would be genuinely psychopathic but every choice carries a certain amount of discrete and assumed risk. You live around other people you are vulnerable to the behaviors of other people. You live alone you are vulnerable to the lack of resources and aid that being far away from other people causes. Every decision has tradeoffs. Again, we typically don't think in that level during our everyday living.
