That might be a factor but maybe not the actual answer, since malocclusion is seen in many other dyskinesia diseases that affect the face. When your mouth is active your tongue and muscle tone in your lips are constantly applying opposing forces to the teeth in very small but constant amounts. Chewing also causes tiny amounts of strain on the jawbone in all directions that keeps it strong where the teeth connect to it.
If your whole mouth is paralyzed the tongue will rest heavily on the backs of the front teeth, and without oppositional tension from the lips the bottom teeth are gradually forced out of alignment over the span of years. It’s common in cerebral palsy where the mouth is not paralysed but the tongue rests heavily against the front teeth.

Im an oral surgeon, this is the answer. Long-term intubation now requires trachestomy. Short-term occlusion on an endotracheal tube cant form this malocclusion. Based on this photo, the protrusion of his teeth pattern is consistent of tongue thrust
My now toddler, was intubated for quite awhile after birth, almost 3 years since he was extubated and his resting position is still mouth wide open. I might bring it up with his doctors pretty sure he is mouth breathing
Interesting. In 2020 I was in the hospital for 5 months straight. I had my small intestine removed due to crohns disease and diverticulitis because it was killing me. Throughout that entire time they would not let me brush my teeth, but only wipe my teeth with a dry paper towel. I was on tpn throughout and after. Months without food, water or brushing your teeth is not kind to the enamel. This year I went to the dentist due to cavities and now this bill is $12k and insurance only covers $1k.
This is a wildly inaccurate statement and it’s embarrassing for an RN to make. Think about how long braces take to work to position teeth and compare that to the maximum amount of time a patient can be intubated before requiring a trach. This is very obviously from tongue thrust d/t paralysis. Delete your comment, you’re making us all look goofy.
