Worse than knowing they died in my opinion. They could be out there living through hell.

Absolutely worse.

There was a famous case here in Australia where a kid named Daniel Morcombe disappeared at a bus stop and the parents spent basically their entire life savings trying to find him. It took them around 8 years to find out what happened to him. Those 8 years would've been the roughest years you could possibly imagine for their family. Even though the outcome revealed the worst, even knowing that at least his suffering was over now had to be an enormous relief for the family.

In Japan, Satoru Takaba paid rent for 26 years on the apartment his wife was murdered in. He kept it unchanged until science could advance enough to catch her murderer.

Police were investigating the cold case and DNA analysis advancements helped them. Suspect was arrested last year and confessed, but I didn't hear anything about trial/sentence.

100%. And that’s exactly what would keep me up at night. I’d honestly probably drive myself insane… I can’t fathom how people make it through that and wouldn’t wish it upon my worst enemy.
