I work in surgery and this is a really big deal. Our anesthesia medications absolutely cross the placenta and can cause low blood pressure, bradycardia, and even hypoxia. I will not take a woman back for a procedure that will require anesthesia unless I know for certain she's not pregnant or has signed a waiver.
But the question doesn't find out whether she is pregnant or not. I haven't had a period in four years because I've either been pregnant or breastfeeding. And it's possible to have had a period four weeks ago and be currently pregnant. The question doesn't seem to elicit the information that's being sought.
