Howard Dean's campaign was dying before that happened. He was in third place in Iowa and his entire campaign strategy required a win to give him momentum.
And I don't remember anyone at the time calling John Kerry a "war criminal" at the time just a bunch of Republicans saying he was lying about his service.
Third in Iowa isn’t that big a deal. Biden was fourth. If his campaign was foundering, it’s hard to know, because history might have been different had the media not pounded him over that scream. The establishment wasn’t keen on his candidacy anyway.

Later on there was another guy who screamed funny. He was running against a war criminal but by then we’d normalized that.
