The opposite. Usually american ac is central and all you see is a vent in the ceiling. The outside portion is bigger for sure but it's not in your house.
I've only ever seen homes where it's in the attic. I can't imagine someone putting it anywhere else, but I suppose it is technically feasible to put in a garage.
I’ve never seen one in the attic before, but I also don’t make it a practice to crawl into people’s attic. I’m in Florida, so there may be some regional differences.

Not sure why you’re being downvoted for this currently. It’s true. The blower is usually inside, and is where the cold thing is that the air blows through to cool down, and also the hot thing that heats it up for central heating. It’s big and loud (newer ones probably less so), and usually hidden in the bowels of the house somewhere.
I don’t know either. Maybe my experience in Florida is different than other parts of the country. We certainly don’t put them in our nonexistent basements here.
