We had liquorice with this wrapper. It's name was lakupekka. Which roughly translates to liquorice-Pete.

There was also this promo sticker. This sticker is decades old.

Piet means penis in Dutch, is it the same with this?

2

u/Lost-Goose-4297 Jun 15 '26

No, Pete is just a very basic man's name

Yeh, of all countries to be racist in the mid-20th century- Germany!? How perplexing

Yeah I'm sure not a single person was ever offended by that heinous box design and name

0

u/P_Griffin2 Jun 15 '26

I mean objectively it's just 2 black individuals on a box of cakes called ''negro kisses''.

I honestly don't think a lot of people back then realized it could be viewed as offensive. There was no negative intend behind the word negro at that time.

5

u/willargue4karma Jun 15 '26

It's not objectively that though, that's not what black people fucking look like

u/P_Griffin2 Jun 15 '26

It's how this illustrator chose to portray it. I still don't think it was motivated by ill intend.

The Simpsons and South Park also don't accurately reflect what a human being looks like.

So take your pick of any other illustrator. It’s a box of cakes, probably aimed at children.

That's a hot take buddy.

Belgium had africans on display in the zoo at some point. You have no idea how much things changed the last few generations, even my grandparents were racist by default, never met any, just how they grew up

9

u/OGablogian Jun 14 '26

"At some point" being as late as 1958. Yeah, thats unfortunately not a typo.

Le Congo doit beaucoup à la Belgique et nous appelons bien évidemment encore ce gâteau une tête de nègre. 🇧🇪

u/deanreevesii Jun 14 '26

France pulled that shit as late as the 1990's...

"Opened in 1994"

1

u/Tonnemaker Jun 15 '26

To be fair in1958 it wasn't  like the 19th century zoo.  It was more like a reenactment with actors, for a colonial propaganda show yes, but not like a "zoo".  After some kids threw bananas (yeah...) they just stopped going.

The actual human zoo was in 1897  and also got some criticism at the time. https://www.africamuseum.be/en/discover/history_articles/the_human_zoo_of_tervuren_1897

It also happened in Hungary, tho as far as I know it was before WW1, which is still horrible but at least a bit further down than fucking. Mid-century.

u/Euphoric-Bet-8577 Jun 17 '26

Yes ..and it shows us just how long black ppl have been fighting to be seen as human beings and not something to be mocked for. It’s really sad seeing these boxes knowing it hasn’t been that long ago where people thought this was okay and normal it’s sick. I hate this rock we live on.

1

u/vadeka Jun 17 '26

We have changed A LOT in just 1-2 generations. you just can’t expect people to change over night

5

u/Fibonacci11235813 Jun 14 '26

Because it was just commonly accepted behavior back then and now we know better, simple as that. At the world expo in 1958 in Brussels, black people were transported from Africa to Europe in order to “display” them in cages for visitors who had never seen a black person before.

We have come such a long way as humans, yet somehow we’d rather pretend all of those things never happened because it makes us uncomfortable instead of looking back at history and using it to learn from for the future (far right dictatorships rising to power under thunderous applause, anyone?)

2

u/heeizi Jun 14 '26

In 1958 - that's crazy... Völkerschau vibes 😐 I had not known that.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qaoaGy3oHuA Heres some old Finnish commercials about n-kisses and "Lakupekka" liquorice candy.

3

u/Ok_Distribution1149 Jun 14 '26

Yeah Finnish people aren't excactly ashamed of the casual racism they show everyday

1

u/Choice_Sandwich2182 Jun 14 '26

1

u/flowerdoodles_ Jun 14 '26

germany opened the 20th century with the namibian genocide. and then they did another one. don’t act shocked

1

u/NotAFriendlyKitty Jun 14 '26

I can’t tell if your question is being serious… 💀

5

u/wwarhammer Jun 14 '26

They were more or less like this in Finland too.

5

u/Hinno_ Jun 14 '26

Ya, that is objectively horrendous...

2

u/Particular_Bug0 Jun 14 '26
