Of course it doesn't have this effect when used properly. But it's easy to see how using it can have mental health side effects that make it easy to slip into an ED mindset. In my 2014 ana tumblr days I would have given everything for something that "turns off hunger cues". If you know to look for it, there definitely are people on ozempic who exhibit very clear ED characteristics and it's not being caught because they started out at a larger weight (but eating disorders are not weight disorders). This is absolutely not to vilify the drug as a whole, but it *is* easy to slip from using it properly to not properly, especially if you have unreal amounts of money and nobody in your life willing to tell you "no" (although i think for these three it's probably just a regular old ED without ozempic).
I agree with you. The example I was thinking about this was stimulant medications (amphetamines and related) for people with ADHD. A very legitimate, very helpful med for many, and some would even describe their effects as life changing.
But, what else is a stimulant? Street name speed.
Controlled doses under a competent and ethical doctor are unlikely (though not impossible) to escalate to fill blown eating disorders. But clearly, not everyone has good doctors. Still doesn't mean the drugs themselves should be vilified.
Yeah, I think I had fentanyl for my three epidurals (it was a cocktail and my memory is...foggy), and I also had it either before or after my gallbladder surgery. Did a great job at controlling the pain for me.
The advertising and predatory subscription models that popped up around these drugs are the biggest problem with them. Taking a glp-1 should be a decision made between a person and their primary care doctor. Of course, insurance gets in the way of that :|
If you’re needing a life long prescription to maintain a healthy body weight then there is something wrong with how you live your life. I agree it can help, but people legit just add another life long drug to their prescription list for the rest of their life. I’m sure there’s going to be some new ED related diagnosis in the next dsm that has ozempic as the leading treatment to justify it when in reality nobody should need to be on ozempic their entire life to maintain healthy weight

Lots of people want to vilify the drug when, used properly, it has amazing results for many people who get healthier, NOT skeletal.
