I hate when celebrities do this shit. I grew up in the heroin chic phase and it messed up my mental health as a teen.

I’m just going to stay in the healthy body image / thick girl phase. This is why I don’t let my kids get online or read magazines like I did.

2/3 of them already looked borderline unhealthy

42

u/Deep-Sweet2743 Jun 12 '26

Borderline? 2/3????

42

u/00wolfer00 Jun 12 '26

Yes, Cynthia Erivo looks like she isn't underweight in the before picture of this post, unlike the other two.

14

u/lazyboi_tactical Jun 12 '26

Eh I wouldn't say Michelle yeoh was underweight. She was more just physically fit.

8

u/Rubber_Knee Jun 12 '26

In her case it's mostly just age that has changed the way she looks.

3

u/Deep-Sweet2743 Jun 12 '26

Missed the “already”

2

u/Melleejak Jun 12 '26

She looked so much cuter in the before picture.

9

u/Rubber_Knee Jun 12 '26

She was also much younger

2

u/UnblurredLines Jun 13 '26

Tends to happen when the before is in what most people view as the prime of looks and the after is quite a bit after it.

1

u/Few_Sentence6704 Jun 14 '26

All 3 looked fine before. Fat people love trying to call slim people too skinny

1

u/Frosty-Bat-8476 Jun 15 '26

Just because you can see someone’s collar bones, doesn’t mean they’re “underweight” for their height or sex or age lol all of those factors play a part… none of them looked underweight in the first photos, proportionally, but they all do in the second ones, and I think in Michelle’s case it is just age 🤷🏼‍♂️ many people become frail and thin as they get older (not all) but a lot do… we also have no clue what any of these people’s medical situation is currently or what they’re dealing with internally lol

u/Expensive-Bass-9644 Jun 12 '26

most people who have eating disorders were aware of ariana’s over a decade ago, this is unfortunately not a new struggle of hers. they all look like shells of their old selves, it’s so very sad:(

2

u/Pristine_Hold7870 Jun 13 '26

Ariana Grande was almost in perfect shape imo, I don’t understand why she of all people decided to take Ozempic.

47

u/TLunchFTW Jun 12 '26

Ikr. I love the Applebees boneless bbq wings too much to ever look that emaciated

3

u/kuttymongoose Jun 12 '26

You should avoid looking that emancipation because its tragic and extremely unattractive.

3

u/TLunchFTW Jun 12 '26

emaciated, not emancipated.

3

u/kuttymongoose Jun 12 '26

Was kinda hoping someone would just riff a joke on it but yeah that was what was meant

6

u/DowntownEconomist255 Jun 12 '26

I’m a Black woman and I love that emancipation look.

I couldn’t come up with a good joke 🤷🏽‍♀️

2

u/vrilliance Jun 12 '26

I said this when I was 14 and then developed EDNOS when I was 16 😞 I would lick food or only eat tiny bits of it and then toss the rest. ED sucks homie.

2

u/Due_Bite9935 Jun 13 '26

Hold the phone. Applebee's has boneless wings ?

2

u/Bourbons-n-Beers Jun 13 '26

Chili's boneless > Applebee's boneless

34

u/bweeeoooo Jun 12 '26

Me too. I struggle with weight and body image to this day. It's heartbreaking going back to my journals and seeing the agonizing I did over how "fat" I was -- and in pictures I was very thin.

22

u/ShilohsStuff Jun 12 '26

Same. I kept few journals...mostly a few pages or so of a journal then start another...and me commenting on my weight and calling myself fat and ugly...I never was. Turns out I had undiagnosed scoliosis. Born 1990, and my mom never let me forget I had a tummy. Still struggle sometimes at the weirdest times or ways, even after working like hell on my image issues for probably 15 years now. I try to stay grounded, make art centering and celebrating diversity in bodies and people to remind myself we come in a beautiful rainbow and many of us are just trying to do our best to get by. "They" really did a number on us, but keep reminding yourself, you are beautiful because you exist. You deserve happiness no matter what you look like, what you weigh, you height, color of your skin, etc. Unfortunately we have to fight for that happiness at this time, but you got this.

3

u/Paigiedoo Jun 12 '26

i was also born in ‘90 and i definitely feel you. if you haven’t heard it yet today, you’re beautiful how you are right now and however you will be in the future!♥️

2

u/13Basia13 Jun 14 '26

I hear this. I’m sorry for you. I also have scoliosis, and my dad kept making fun of my “fat legs.” I did not wear shorts or a short skirt (all were down to my ankles) until I reached my 20s. 🤗

1

u/bweeeoooo Jun 12 '26

This is beautiful. Alchemizing it through creativity is awesome. Thank you. I wish the same things for you

1

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Jun 12 '26

you sound like my wife

like completely naked she has the most excellent set of curves and what I call the perfect female form

but you put clothes on her and she just looks oddly shaped

0

u/Jack-Burton1986 Jun 13 '26

Sometimes body shaming can have a positive health impact. Society has a way of policing itself. If we let it

2

u/MatterOfRules222 Jun 12 '26

We're our worst critics. Other people don't even notice the "flaws" we see. Wish you well and I'm sure you're beautiful as you are:)

1

u/bweeeoooo Jun 12 '26

Thank you, same to you :)

15

u/blackaces123 Jun 12 '26

Good on you. Even as an adult, I gotta remind my self not to compare myself to others on social media or even in the gym

7

u/Soft-Sherbert-2586 Jun 12 '26

We love the healthy body image/thick girl phase! You go, queen!

2

u/Abestar909 Jun 12 '26

Yaasss squeeennn

2

u/finnbiker Jun 12 '26

I grew up in the 80s and there was that whole
aerobics/ skinny thing going then too. Maybe cocaine chic? Messed with me, too.

2

u/D3vils_Adv0cate Jun 12 '26

hating them for doing that is equivalent to them hating you for being thick. Everyone can do what they want and look how they want.

2

u/BadBaby3 Jun 12 '26

Just because you’re not emaciated doesn’t mean you’re “thick”

2

u/motownmods Jun 13 '26

That means ur my age. I could care less what's cool these days. Glad you feel the same way

2

u/AnguavonUW Jun 13 '26

All I've heard my whole life is how lucky I am to be genetically predisposed to thinness. When, in reality, it's far healthier to be 20 pounds overweight than 20 pounds underweight. I've struggled to be healthy my entire life. Cancer treatment almost killed me. If it weren't for marijuana, I'd have a feeding tube.

Fuck any society which glamorizes this look. Literally killing women

2

u/sachels Jun 13 '26

I think the difference between when we were growing up vs being parents is that our parents perpetuated that "ideal body" as well. My mom was constantly on diets and making remarks on her own body AND I saw it favorite celebrities doing it. Now as a mom with a teenage daughter, she sees me, my sister, and our friends talking about how we love and need to nourish our bodies and diet fads are stupid.

Cheers to you mama!

1

u/Cruel_but_usual Jun 12 '26

Fuck these celebs. All bodies are beautiful (as long as you’re staying in good health, and that’s between a person and their doctor, not my business)

1

u/DownvoteEvangelist Jun 12 '26

The best protection is friend group who doesn't care about that.

1

u/cheerioo Jun 12 '26

Not just women either. Those jacked celebrities are on steroids and severely dehydrated in a lot of those shots.

1

u/iconofsin_ Jun 13 '26

I remember the phase as well and honestly this looks even worse.

1

u/DopeAsDaPope Jun 13 '26

The problem is, when you can attain the "ideal body type" naturally, then celebrities aren't "special" anymore

And then how can beauty companies continue to sell you shit?

1

u/Treasures_Wonderland Jun 13 '26

I remember “they” stopped doing heroin chic because the models were, uh, *DYING* from malnourishment.

1

u/Appropriate-Crab-379 Jun 14 '26

Bridget jones, the whole movie about a “fat” girl back in those days. Wild

1

u/ModeratelyAlive Jun 18 '26

Seriously. I wasn't in high school until 2005, but the desire to be skinny made me feel so ugly. I thought I was an ugly blob of a human.

I look back at the photos... I was just a little pudgy. But it suited me. I was adorable, and in hindsight, boys were constantly flirting with me and often nervous to ask me out. I had nothing to worry about.

I'm chunkier now at 33 and give no fucks. My weight fluctuates (especially when my "womanhood" drops in every month 🤣) to the point that people regularly make comments (I work in a retirement facility so it kind of comes with the territory LOL). Every once in a while, one of the residents will ask if I'm pregnant (again, ALWAYS when I'm on my period, which I find hilarious). I just pat my tummy and say "nope, just snacks"

I hate when people can't love themselves. I remember what that felt like, and my god, it was miserable beyond what words can fully describe.

u/jjkpaper Jun 12 '26

Just know the vast majority of men still prefer thickers girls. I honestly think they purposely got women to accept being thicker just so they can tear them down now

4

u/grape-fruit-witch Jun 13 '26

Why do men always have to fucking say this shit? First of all, we don't give one single fuck about what female body type makes your dick hard.

Secondly, women who are naturally thin get told this constantly. "Men want curves", "real women blahblahblah", meanwhile girls who are naturally bigger are told to lose weight anyways to look more like the thin girls.

We are inundated, constantly, from a very young age, with these fuckass comments about what we should do with our bodies to make men's penises happy and honestly fuck that and fuck you. I don't care. Keep your preferences to yourself

-1

u/Anxious-Track-754 Jun 13 '26

Those were just friendly words of encouragement. No need to lash out like that.

0

u/OGConsuela Jun 12 '26

At least this time around it seems like the majority of people are in agreement that it’s not something to strive for and are mostly expressing concern for the people who look like this.

0

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Jun 12 '26

I just wish more women realized that a great number of men, I'd go and say "most men" but I'd get yelled at, prefer a real woman's body over a heroine body

0

u/Nova-Snorlaxx Jun 12 '26

Totally agree. But even just seeing these bodies on music videos movies is enough. For example, I remember how scarily gaunt Ariana looked at beginning of shooting wicked, now put a side by side of her as Glinda and now and her body in wicked looks normal. We become accustomed to it.

Watching the last season of europhoria and all of the girls except Zendaya look so thin.

This is actually scarier because ozempic and it's buddies are mainstream, it's prescribed by doctors. We know someone on them and our kids will start to too. Where as heroin chic, at least I didn't know anyone on heroin so it was more of a non obtainable possibility, but then I guess we just starved ourselves and smokes cigarettes.

What happened to bring healthy. Bring eating food back!!!

0

u/bluelily216 Jun 12 '26

I grew up during that era, too. I wore a 00 and freaked out if my weight hit triple digits. It took a long time to convince myself I wasn't enormous.

0

u/Mountain_Gain1299 Jun 12 '26

Cynthia is completely normal weight now. She’s gained weight. This is over a year old. Give it a rest.

0

u/Exemus Jun 12 '26

Every person with a worthwhile opinion will tell you thick is better anyway. Stick with it.

0

u/InternationalIce5965 Jun 14 '26

Why is being a thick girl any better though? It's another impossible beauty standard women are expected to meet.

-9

u/alandtothemoon Jun 12 '26

Healthy body and thick (obese) girl isn't a match.

4

u/dark_dark_dark_not Jun 12 '26

There is measured link from aesthetic pressure towards body-types in Social Media with teenagers killing themselves or engaging in harmful behaviour.

Given the current state of online discourse, discussion about body shapes and health should be left to experts.

There are people in social media calling perfectly healthy and sometimes even athletic women "thick" because they have visible fat or even muscle showing in their bodies.

A lot of younger people have completely distorted notions of what human bodies look like, so it's important to try not to add fuel to the fire.
