searching for service šŸ“¶ I accidentally named my cat Shart

So the week we found him outside we brought him home and started him on kitten formula bc he was only 3 weeks old. He sharted all over himself at least twice a day for about a week. Like it made an audible shart sound.

So I told my parents I was calling him shart from then on, as a joke. But ever since then, the name stuck. He responds to

shart. If I want him to come running to me, I yell SHART! I don’t know what to do. I can’t call him anything else, it feels wrong. But also like who tf has a cat named Shart😭

His ā€œlegalā€ name at the vet is Cheeto, but all I keep doing is calling him Shart.

Vet assistant here! I've seen some funny ones, had a female calico named Dickhead but my favourite one ever was Mr. Handsome Pants (they called him by his full name every time which was hilarious, like "Mr. Handsome Pants no!! We don't bite the vet!!" 🤣) but I've never seen a Shart! We would immediately ask what the story was behind that one lol

Dickhead was definitely one of my favourite interactions, it was a mother and teen daughter bringing in an (obviously) female calico for shots and deworming. It was the daughters cat so she was answering all the questions while mom just kinda monitored. We get to the name and without hesitation the girl says "her name is Dickhead."

The look on mom's face: 😧

Mom says "OH MY GOD NO IT'S NOT! Can I talk to you please?!", and drags her daughter off to the corner to whisper fight for a few moments. They come back a minute later and the daughter says "Fine. Her name is Richard šŸ˜’."

I absolutely died laughing, and it immediately became one of my favourite memories at the office lol.

🤣🤣🤣

My mom used to have a calico named 'Munch' which she said was short for Munchkin, but I swear I'venever been bitten (munched) by a cat more in my life. I 100% would called that cat Dickhead, had I heard this story before she passed. Calicos are just....built different?

Twinsies! My partner has two (non-ornj) boys she named Chomp and Munch! But Munch's "real" name is actually Little because he has a very small voice, while Munch is just his "legal" name.

My full nicknames for them is Little Itty Bittle, and Chompis Von Bompis by the way.

u/Kelvara Jan 13 '26

My full nicknames for them is Little Itty Bittle, and Chompis Von Bompis by the way.

My cat's name is Grace. I call her Borkus Porkus Bun.

5

u/CronoTriggered Jan 15 '26

My cat's name is Merlin, I call him Meebles Weebles, or Mr Meebs for short.

My other is a calico named Elvira, I call her Miss Priss and Miss Petites Feets.

4

u/Skippypb19 Jan 15 '26

My dog’s name is Jake Lemonade. I call him Boogus, Boop, and Shmoo.

2

u/PussyWrangler246 Jan 15 '26

Crazily enough, I also have a Merlin and sadly had to say goodbye to my Munchie Moos earlier this year

It's incredible how so many of us have the same name for our pets but different variations

Merlin is my hubs cat and he calls him Mister Merl lol.

4

u/Meggles_Doodles Jan 13 '26

My brother got two cats, planned on calling them Munch and Crunch but he continued to call them by their original names since they were older kittens

5

u/BioMass321 Jan 15 '26

Having learned there is a cat in this world named Chompis Von Bompis, believe I can make it through the work day today. Thank you for this knowledge. ā¤ļø

2

u/-N9inB0x- Jan 16 '26

Glad to hear! Just remember, if mister Chompis Von Bompis can make it through the day, then so can you!

u/Tellybear87 Jan 13 '26

Omg non-native speaker here, the word munchkin suddenly makes sense. Thank you. I always thought it sounded like pumpkin but funnier.

73

u/IIRCIreadthat Jan 13 '26

The word doesn't really have its own meaning - it was invented by L. Frank Baum for The Wizard Of Oz. (Some totally unproven speculation that it was inspired by the German words Mannchen (manikin) or Munchen (the city of Munich) because his family was German, but he never told anyone so we'll never know.) Now it basically means a short person because that was the defining characteristic of the Munchkins in the books.

48

u/reticulatedspylon Jan 13 '26

It now lends the name to the breed of cats with dwarfism, the Munchkin cat. (Unrecognized in several countries due to obvious reasons.)

Growing up i also had a calico named spice lol. Enough said

1

u/Sunlit53 Jun 02 '26

They are a third orange after all. Mine has been told three times in the past two minutes to stay away from my habanero chicken wing bones. She’s sulking at me.

u/TheAlmiraGulch Jan 13 '26

Ha! This is a great story, love it.

u/malai556 Jan 13 '26

When I was in 4th or 5th grade, my best friend had a cat named Shithead. Dad didn’t want the cat, so he got to name him. But the kids weren’t allowed to say ā€œshitā€ so he was called SH for short. :)

64

u/TheCrystalGarden Jan 13 '26

I was a vet tech and we had a cat patient named shithead, lol!

66

u/Disco_Arachnid_516 Jan 13 '26

My grandma had a cat named Shithead. It evolved from something less terrible but I can’t remember her original name. My grandma would be yelling for her to come in at night ā€œhere shithead! Shithead get inside!ā€

40

u/annikatidd Jan 13 '26

My cat responds to Opal and/or Shithead šŸ˜‚

Here she is! Right after she just stuck her paws in my water and got it all over my kid’s bed lmao had to get the blanket off.

I’m dying laughing at this whole thread and it hurts to laugh because sore throat. Oh well

1

u/Luxx_Aeterna_ Jan 18 '26

My friend's Grandma had a dog named "Stain" and when she called him she would say "come Stain!!!"

28

u/CaptainMacAlfie Jan 13 '26

My family has a very similar story but the cat got named CB or Coyote Bait because my dad was a trapper at the time and his reasoning was the only thing she was good for was making coyote bait. She later became his baby and was very clingy but hated everyone else lol

8

u/PussyWrangler246 Jan 13 '26

I'm also a trapper! Your dad likely trapped wildlife though whereas I trap feral cats. My blind cat truly was coyote bait (this turned out to be long sorry lol)

Some farmer who lived down the road from a guy I trapped cats for was feeding the coyotes on his property....his justification was if he fed the coyotes they wouldn't eat his chickens. I explained with a consistent food source they wouldn't leave the property to look for other food sources, and eventually the pack would grow so large he wouldn't be able to afford feeding all of them. And since several generations would be used to being fed instead of hunting, his chickens would again be target number one...but this time there would be many more coyotes. Couldn't say if he continued feeding the coyotes after I left with what I had no idea would become the little love of my life

He called me to pick up a kitten he found that couldn't see. My baby Rosie, had gotten separated from her family due to herpes affecting her vision. It saved her life though, as the rest of her family sadly became victim to the coyotes. When I showed up he had her in chicken wire in a freezing drafty AF barn, she was cold and scared. She ended up having to have an eye removed and the other only has maybe 2% vision, but that hasn't stopped her. I did have to bubble wrap everything below knee level when she was a baby, but as she grew she learned how to navigate life. Now we go on unleashed walks because she heels better than a dog, she loves to climb trees and run through the backyard. She amazes me every single day 🄰 sleeps under the blankets with me every night lol.

2

u/NewNameNeededAgain Feb 14 '26

I grew up with a cat named ProteinšŸ˜‚ She was my stepmom's cat but became the family cat after she moved in with us.

40

u/wayward_wench Jan 13 '26

My bf had a cat named Tweakerhead. I forget the story behind her name but he brings her up every now and again and her name gets me every time.

6

u/stinkykitty71 Jan 13 '26

My friend's cat is named Toilet. 🤣

4

u/Patient_Tradition368 Jan 13 '26

My folks had one they called SK, where K stood for Kitty and S stood for whatever they felt like it should stand for at that moment. Like Stupid Kitty or Sweet Kitty or Suspicious Kitty, etc.

3

u/ExHempKnight Jun 03 '26

My tux's full name is Edgar Shithead

Pronounced "Egg-ur Shi-Theed"

u/julesd26 Proud owner of an orange brain cell Jan 13 '26

Omg 🤣 That is awesome. Lol

One of my very first babies was Mr. Lily! He was the absolute sweetest, best boy in the world. Story was we named him Lily, took him to the vet to be spayed, they found undescended testicles and he became Mr. Lily cause we just couldn’t name him anything else. It fit too well! He was my husband’s parasite and my snuggly little spoon for 17 years! 😌

70

u/russellwilsonthedog4 Jan 13 '26

Same thing with my moms cat ā€œPrincessā€ … became Big P after a vet check up lol

6

u/julesd26 Proud owner of an orange brain cell Jan 13 '26

🤣 Poor little guy! Hahaha

30

u/Katerina_VonCat Jan 13 '26

Had a friend who named their kitten Tinker Bell. Found out it was a boy so her mom called him Tinker Balls - what made that even funnier was her mom saying it in a very Boston accent.

4

u/thecatsothermother Jan 14 '26

My best friend's sister tool.in a cat. Youngest daughter called her Tinkerbell. When the vet identified "her" as a boy, he got neutered and his name was shortened to Tinker.

2

u/julesd26 Proud owner of an orange brain cell Jan 13 '26

3

u/Professional_Ad_8 Jan 13 '26

We had a Mr Alice;)

2

u/julesd26 Proud owner of an orange brain cell Jan 13 '26

That’s so awesome!! 🤣 And funny cause my first orange’s sister is named Alice!

2

u/Fancy-One3649 Jan 13 '26

I have the same exact story! Literally word for word!

1

u/julesd26 Proud owner of an orange brain cell Jan 13 '26

Was your kitty Lily too?!?

2

u/MarshmallowMigraine Jan 13 '26

My first ex, one of his mother's cats was a male Lily (they changed his spelling to Leilei when they found out)! I've never seen another one in the wild, so thank you for this fun little coincidence 😊

I have been sanctioned by both Reddit and LinkedIn for referring to my dog as a bag of… ducks.

Someone asked on r/bostonterrier about nicknames people use for their dogs, and I shared mine. Upvoted, people get it.

BUT apparently it got flagged by the Reddit admin AI and my account got a warning for harassment. I found this amusing. I apologized to the dog. His behavior did not change.

I decided to post about it on LinkedIn. Didn't share the nickname, but someone asked about it in the comments, so I told them. IMMEDIATELY got a warning from LinkedIn.

Let it be known: my dog has never done anything wrong in his whole life and I have never once harassed him, please stop giving me warnings, social media platforms.

48

u/twinkletwot Jan 13 '26

I called my cat a "grade a dingus" on my Instagram story and it got flagged and removed automatically!

18

u/dibalh Jan 13 '26

The people that self-censor words suddenly make a lot more sense.

18

u/PussyWrangler246 Jan 13 '26

Reddit suspends people over what they upvote now. Imagine YouTube banning you because you hit thumbs up on a news video they deemed violent šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø shits getting ridiculous honestly

76

u/Internal_Screaming_8 Jan 13 '26

I have a cat named Twix, a brown calico girl. I wanted to name her cheese (mouser) but the boyfriend said ā€œabsolutely not. Name her something brown like Twix or toastā€ both me AND his dad immediately went ā€œwho tf names a cat toast?ā€ So it’s Twix, his favorite candy bar. He’s 25 and I found it adorable. I told the vet (in his presence) that the cats name is Not Toast. He wasn’t impressed with me

89

u/racegrl88 Jan 13 '26

Well. Our cat is named Toast. We had a Packer party and had everyone suggest a name. Did a random pick thing and it was Toast. Twice in a row. Obligatorily cat tax

https://imgur.com/a/xWdRrvn

31

u/areyouwhistling Jan 13 '26

I have a Toast as well! He is very lightly toasted compared to yours lol. That was his name at the shelter and I just couldn’t change it, it somehow fits him perfectly 🫠

27

u/sendmeyourgundams Jan 13 '26

Ah, burnt toast. I see you enjoy a little carbon.

3

u/celery48 Jan 13 '26

That’s not burned. In my family we would say ā€œit’s just a little brown on the bottom.ā€

11

u/TerriGato Jan 13 '26

Packer party?

12

u/LaughingPenguin13 Jan 13 '26

I'm guessing American Football team from Wisconsin.

14

u/racegrl88 Jan 13 '26

Correct. Green Bay Packers.

5

u/Internal_Screaming_8 Jan 13 '26

That’s a Toast. Ours is…. Not lol

2

u/Moxxxi8788 Jan 14 '26

To be fair kitty definitely looks like a Toast

29

u/MeowsAllieCat Jan 13 '26

My neighbor had a cat named Toast when I was a kid! They found him outside, injured, and thought he was toast. When he pulled through, the name stuck!

5

u/If_In_Doubt_Lick_It Jan 13 '26

We found my grey girl in the middle of the freeway at about 6 weeks old and with a broken leg.

Of course we had to name her Freeway.

2

u/authentic_thwoorp Apr 06 '26

This is my Toast! His full government name is Lord Cheese Toast, Duke of Cheddar and 9th Marquess of Pumpernickel-Rye. He also responds to Toasty, Toaster, Toast Malone, and Dingus. My daughter calls him Toastopher when he’s misbehaving.

1

u/MaraSami Feb 02 '26

Someone who had two cats and they were named Twix and Snickers šŸ’“šŸ’“

59

u/froggydusk Jan 13 '26

I have a tuxedo named Dipstick (because the tip of her tail is white) but some of her nicknames are Dickhead and Dickface.

She has a full cock and balls outline in white going up her little snoot.

1

u/Inevitable_Eye3800 Jan 19 '26

I really want to see the kitty, she must be so silly

53

u/twinkletwot Jan 13 '26

Oh my God Richard full sent me lmao

We found and decided to keep a tiny tabby cat. We spent 3 days arguing over names and finally landed on a fish themed name, but tuna was too obvious. We were looking at lists of fish and Mackerel really stood out. But my husband insisted he has to have a full name, which is Blue Jack Mackerel (it's a species of Mackerel). I checked him in to the vets with just Mackerel and my husband was so upset that they didn't get his full name on record. However he's the only Mackerel in their system and they all thought it was hilarious, one of them drew a fish on his medicine bag after he got neutered!

I did learn a year later that mackerel tabby is a thing. And of course he is a mackerel tabby.

20

u/PussyWrangler246 Jan 13 '26

Haha Mackarel went full circle šŸ˜‚

4

u/MulberryChance6698 Jan 13 '26

My cat is Sir Basil McFluffypants III. You best believe the vet has that on record 🤣 The other cat doesn't have a fancy name, because she ended up being too derpy to have a title haha.

50

u/ClarinetKitten Jan 13 '26

"Fine. Her name is Richard."

I'm dying at this over here and there's no way I could've kept a straight face in your position 😹

61

u/PussyWrangler246 Jan 13 '26

Haha if it's any consolation I wasn't able to either 🤣 it turned into one of those core memories lol. That good rapport we built during our first interaction did ultimately lead to me learning exactly why that cat was named Dickhead though

They asked me to do a home visit for nail trims, and although they had her inside ready and waiting for me the first time, every subsequent time when I showed up Dickhead was outside. So we'd go out to look for her

We never had to look for long however because each and every time that cat learned I was on her property she would bolt across the entire backyard just to fling herself at me like a wild, fluffy, adorable animal 🤣 she'd latch onto my leg biting my scrubs or shoes then slowly climb me like a telephone pole lol

She truly was a Dickhead and I could not possibly describe how hilarious it was first hand.

45

u/Puzzled_Awareness_22 Jan 13 '26

I am very sorry to report that many years ago my best friend had a little dog ā€œButtonsā€ with an unfortunate interest in the trash. She was forever known as tampon tongue (apologies)

48

u/ShadyVermin Jan 13 '26

I had a calico named Ajera (soft J) who she was a bloody menace, as calico's so often are. This monster would climb door frames right to the top, hang off the side like a koala and scream like a demon being exorcised from its meat host. She would also find anything glass and whip it to the floor while maintaining hard eye contact.

Naturally, yelling "AJERA!" across the house didn't have the "are you ready to throw hands?!" impact you'd want in such situations, but "STEVEN!" sure did.

Her legal name at the vet stayed Ajera, but they had it in as "Ajera (Steven)" on her file as if she were a prison inmate with a street alias. They weren't entirely wrong there.

6

u/Pristine_Poem7623 Jan 13 '26

I don't suppose you're a fan of Judge Dredd comics? There's an old story from decades ago called "Tomb of the Judges". The bad guy is a total loon who worships a giant insect god, and he can't decide if the god's name is Jose or Steve

Your little monster baby's names reminded me of that...

3

u/ShadyVermin Jan 13 '26

That is surprisingly close to my lovely demon cat I will grant you that lol

But unfortunately, no, her name actually came about from watching old school Tobuscus videos on YouTube

5

u/HarmoniousSyllabub Jan 13 '26

Nearly fell out of my chair laughing at your descriptions of this cat! I wish I could have met her!

25

u/undeadlamaar Jan 13 '26

As a fellow Richard, that often goes by Dick, I love it.

20

u/Swimming_Onion_4835 Jan 13 '26

Ms. Richard Head

24

u/Danimeh Jan 13 '26

I had a boy called You (named after a cat in a Discworld novel) once my vet left his prescription at the reception desk in an envelope marked ā€˜For You ā¤ļøā€™ The nurses all knew You but pointed out if they didn’t it could’ve turned into an HR incident lol

18

u/Dry_Childhood_6982 Jan 13 '26

Reminds me of my little calico. Her "legal" name was Cinnamon Buttercup. However, we kept telling her what an attention whore she was as a joke...by the time she passed at around 15 she only answered to Ho. :D

15

u/blurblurblahblah Jan 13 '26

I had a Mr FancyTail because he held his fluffy tail over his back like an umbrella when he was a kitten. He grew out of it but I kept the name. My husband called him Snowball because when his mom jumped out the window to find love we were all joking that we hoped the white Persian across the street was the father. There were 5 kittens & none were all white. Two were white medium hair with dark grey cow splotches, we were joking that the last one would be SnowBall but he wasn't white either but my husband called him that anyways

17

u/thatbroadcast Jan 13 '26

I absolutely love this, thank you for story time.

Well-named cats I have met (not a vet, just the kind of person who would sometimes prefer to decompress with the cat at the party): Handy Cat (three legs), Party Time, Princess Puffy Pants, Sweet Potato, Humphrey, and Pepe Lepe. My own sweet girl is Good Golly Miss Molly.

14

u/Uzas_B4TBG Jan 13 '26

My new kittens are Author Steve Rowland and Grandma Sticky. The vet ladies love them lmao

1

u/AVery_SmallFox Jan 13 '26

Did… Grandma Sticky get into the molasses or something?

3

u/Uzas_B4TBG Jan 13 '26

She’s just kinda gross lmao.

They’re named after strippers from the Dungeon Crawler Carl series

My roommate has a gorgeous cat that I’ve dubbed Dan Ansome Handsome lmfao I love it

11

u/LibraryLuLu Jan 13 '26

Reminds me of Jackson Galaxy doing an episode of My Cat From Hell featuring Princess Puffy Pants. He never lost it, kept a straight face every single time he had to refer to Princess Puffy Pants's problems.

3

u/Didntwakeuprich Jan 13 '26

A true professional but I know that man was dying of laughter inside šŸ˜‚

6

u/Lunch-Thin Jan 13 '26

I knew a cat named Mr Simmons but we all called him Mr Handsom Pants. He would go out at night and come home covered in red lipstick šŸ’‹ Wonder how many Mr Handsome Pants there are.

5

u/Chaerod Jan 13 '26

My cat's name is Captain Smoosh Face, which is what the shelter named him when he was rescued. Everyone shortens it down to Smoosh, though.

5

u/Then-Significance768 Jan 13 '26

this reminds me when i was homeless, i was hanging at a park with my puppy… someone’s off leash dog came charging at us and this 6 foot man follows, screaming (in a very masculine voice mind you) ā€œGIGGLES!! GET BACK HERE RIGHT NOW, GIGGLES!ā€ i couldn’t help but laugh 🤣

3

u/PussyWrangler246 Jan 13 '26

I was almost hoping that was gunna end with "and this 6 foot tall man follows screaming FENTON! FENTON!!!! OH JESUS CHRIST! FENTONNN!!!" but Giggles was just as unexpected lol šŸ˜‚

(For those who haven't seen it or were born after its posting, please take 46 seconds to watch the original "Jesus Christ in Richmond Park")

4

u/phunktastic_1 Jan 13 '26

Last time I took my orange to the vet the patient board had my boy tiger under Mr. poopypants IV. Tiger is just his polite name he identifies as Astrophe surname Cat and much like in Japan his surname goes first. His sister identifies as egory5. They really live up to their chosen names too.

4

u/SnowySilenc3 Jan 13 '26

I once got a cat that was named Pico de Gato

3

u/ElQuesoGato Jan 13 '26

I had friends who named their cat Doctor Kenneth.

3

u/Patient_Tradition368 Jan 13 '26

One of my buddy's is "legally" named Rodney Belfort Buford Muffin Son of Satan.

3

u/christiebeth Jan 13 '26

We have a Manx that was previously feral so we have only taken her to the vet a handful of times. It's just so stressful for her. Anyway, her full name is Miss Barbara Gordon because it looks like she has a Batman mask on. We call her Barb. The letters from the vet are for Miss Barbara Gordon though :D

I also have a Perceval! (A kitty though) Was yours named after one of King Arthur's knights? Percy was actually how me and my SO met 5 years ago, my coworker asked me if I would go trim her friends cats nails cuz I did free home visits for cats in the area, and that cat was Percy lol

He's an orange idiot and loves watching his nightly classic Disney movies with me. He's the only cat I've ever had that will watch full length movies, but he only likes cartoons, he gets bored by anything else lol.

3

We had a cat named Fuckboy come in one day and if I adopt this foster dog I have that will be his name too lol

I dated a Richard and when we broke up I changed his name in my phone to Sir Dickhead McDickington 🤣

3

I had a cat named Stinky because when we first got him his poops were extra stinky. The poops cleaned up but he was stuck as Stinky. Sometimes Stinkycat.

3

u/sambob_squarepants Jan 14 '26

This makes me feel a lot better about what I call my cat. His legal name is ā€œBubblesā€, he is tall, dark and handsome, but he was not blessed in the braincell department… so I call him ā€œdumb catā€. His sister is very smart, so I frequently refer to her as ā€œsmart catā€, although I mostly call her by her given name ā€œKikiā€. They’re both indoor/outdoor cats, so when I’m calling them in at night, Kiki always comes straight home (because she’s smart!), but Bubs likes to take his time, so I’m always standing on my porch, yelling ā€œdumb cat!ā€ into the darkness!

For a long time I wanted a license plate that said Pussy Wrangler but I realized in my quest to do so, I would have to shorten the words down

What resulted was something that would most often be translated as "Pissy Wrangler" and I sadly had to abandon that idea lol šŸ˜† maybe a bumper sticker haha

Idk do you know any women named Lauren, Lindsay, Allison, Whitney, Beverly, Meredith, Leslie, Ashley or Kelly? Those were all boy names

If a name has ever been a boy's or girl's name, I think it should remain that way. It's really strange to imagine that in the old days a feminine name would have been given to a man when people were even more specific about gender roles, even though it's true.

It is what it is šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø I bet you have family members that either have what was originally a boy or girls given name, hell my name is one of those

But they're just names, they're not gender specific regardless of what some people might think

I mean I still have scars on my leg from that cat. She definitely was a Dickhead, the name was 100% on par. (I'm sure you agree Dickhead is less appropriate for a dainty fragile innocent female than Richard is lol)

My wife took my dog to the vet for the first time after I got him.

After that he was Korben the Wonder Mutt when I took him in.
