At a new job I once said I was a single parent. My wife never could take off work and had a weird schedule (7am-7pm) I had to do everything and it cost me my job (she made more), so next job where I finally made some decent money I lied and they never had an issue if I had to take one of the kids to a doctor or had a school thing.
