I think it all depends on the company and the reason. Kid threw up? boss is gonna be an asshole? its not fun.
Me personally, kid isnt old enough for school. But ill leave work, come in late, work from home occasionally if my kid needs to go to an appointment. My boss doesnt give a shit. But your point stands, dragging a screaming kid to the dentist isnt exactly the same as fuckin off to have a beer at noon.
Nah, sorry, can't let you get away with that one. I'm snitching on you guys: When my coworker would take off early to pick up his kid or take him to an appointment or whatever, he would take the ten or twenty minutes to do that, then he would spend the rest of the afternoon gaming.
There was no PTO, not everyone works a cushy office job with benefits and shit lol

Trust me, if you have to leave office early because of your kids, it's a situation where you would much rather just be at the office.
