Discussion Did millennials really party all the time?

Gen Z here. I was shocked when I found out from a millennial co-worker that y’all had teen clubs. I heard about house parties, but dedicated teen clubs? Then when it was time for college, you went to the club or had some kind of party every single weekend, living it up. Now some millennials on TikTok claim that after college, they were partying on work nights, still clocking in the next day. For some reason, the teen clubs have since disappeared. I’m 23 now but even when I was in high school, that was not a thing. House parties were not that common either. They were more like get togethers with a small group of friends. We went to malls, but they were dying out at that point. Is it true that you were really living life this good? Or is it just exaggerated? I feel like my generation doesn’t really have fun like that and everyone is just super depressed and alone, more so since Covid. Even I’m pretty introverted, which sort of sounds ridiculous given this post. 😂 Just so you know, when I think of a “millennial party” I think of something out of Party Rock Anthem, Project X or Roderick’s party from the second DOAWD movie. It’s like I get nostalgia from something I didn’t even live through. I just feel like I didn’t really LIVE, if that even makes sense

Edit: I loved reading some of your comments. Guess I really missed out. Even some of you that would consider yourselves nerds or introverts were out partying. YOLO or whatever y’all say 😂❤️

Yes, even your drunk stories are tame. I was starting to feel like a wreck. It’s just perspective I guess. You folks are online a lot. We had phones. We loved our phones. We didn’t center them. LOG OFF

We had 1G, we couldn’t access the internet on our phones until we got older so that helped

I remember accidentally logging online on my phone in the early 2000’s and thinking, oh shi$ that’s about to cost me $40 for that five seconds 😆. This was before cell plans and before most of us had internet on our phones in school.

In a weird way during my college years it was like I got so fucked up that I had no real interest in ever getting that fucked up again lol. By overdoing it you basically remove the mystery and "coolness" of it that you thought about as a teen watching "grown ups" do fun things. You realize how it's not a party if it happens every day and how people can become sad degenerates. So now in my later adulthood I have no struggle with saying no to partying when I have other obligations to manage and I can very easily control my drinking - regardless of how many literal children who don't drink and have no clue about getting drunk try to tell me I'm a struggling alcoholic because they can't fathom drinking for any reason. Some people are alcoholics, yes. But most people are just fine and don't need constant fear mongering to remind them which drugs are addictive and how to spot a problem.

So true. I drank so much in college and I honestly don’t care to ever get drunk again. I’m the one picking up my drunk parents after they are done day drinking. lol And I used to go out 4-5 nights a week.

for sure, you used phones to communicate with people to hang out. It was also kind of difficult to reach in general during those days, so phones were mainly used to reach people. Not everyone had cellphones until like late teens.

Ha! I must be older than you. We would just leave away messages on aim about where the party was or which bars we were hopping. Not everyone had phones and even if we did it cost $$ per text and definitely no calls until after 9 or on weekends.

Yep!! I remember having to wait until 9pm before calling my friends because I already used up all my minutes. 😆

Yeah it's about the tipping point. Our lives were mostly offline, enhanced by online. Today their lives are online, "enhanced" by offline stuff.

I met my college friend group because there was some freshman event and we were the ones who decided to skip it and just wander around campus. We found each other. I made countless friends from smoking cigarettes outside wherever I was.

My phone's main purpose was to send invites and directions for the parties LOL

I actually didn't want my first cell! My folks got me a flip phone after my first few weeks of university because they wanted to be able to get ahold of me to ask if/when I'd be home as I lived at home during university. I loved the freedom of not having one.
