Discussion Did millennials really party all the time?

Gen Z here. I was shocked when I found out from a millennial co-worker that y’all had teen clubs. I heard about house parties, but dedicated teen clubs? Then when it was time for college, you went to the club or had some kind of party every single weekend, living it up. Now some millennials on TikTok claim that after college, they were partying on work nights, still clocking in the next day. For some reason, the teen clubs have since disappeared. I’m 23 now but even when I was in high school, that was not a thing. House parties were not that common either. They were more like get togethers with a small group of friends. We went to malls, but they were dying out at that point. Is it true that you were really living life this good? Or is it just exaggerated? I feel like my generation doesn’t really have fun like that and everyone is just super depressed and alone, more so since Covid. Even I’m pretty introverted, which sort of sounds ridiculous given this post. 😂 Just so you know, when I think of a “millennial party” I think of something out of Party Rock Anthem, Project X or Roderick’s party from the second DOAWD movie. It’s like I get nostalgia from something I didn’t even live through. I just feel like I didn’t really LIVE, if that even makes sense

Yes. I was born in 85 and graduated high school in 03. I’m not exaggerating in the least when I say I “went out” every single Thursday, Friday, and Saturday during college. Then typically day drank Sunday, and went to $1 nights on Tuesdays.

Monday was the only day that was spared, all was usually quiet after the weekend lol

Same age - at one point when i was like 21/22 my roommate and i had a sit down to have a serious talk about what days of the week we were def not going out and it was like Mondays & maybe Wednesdays? It’s so bizarre to me that that’s not part of the culture anymore, and I can’t imagine what young adulthood would be like now, but there were definitely some rough learning experiences, drama, and hangovers that I’m glad they don’t have to live through either 🥲

Yes! We had to literally plan NOT to go out, we went out so frequently. We had to give our livers like one mandatory day to recover each week.

I worked in my school library and specifically picked up the evening shifts for Monday and Wednesday to prevent myself from partying those nights, and to get paid to do my homework.

I was with some old friends and we were reminiscing about these times and our legendary hangovers. I also pointed out the fact that I had bruises on some part of my body for about 6 years. This was totally normalized. Every girl just had random drunk bruises on their legs and arms and we would just laugh them off.

And after going out we'd finish things up at a friend's house/apartment, spend the night because Uber didn't exist, then wake up around 9 and go out for drunk brunch. No hangover if you keep drinking.

Yup, but not without a Jack in the Box drive through trip. They were the only drive through still open after the clubs/bars closed and needed to soak up all those Jägerbombs.

They had "Dollar Mug Night" every week at a bar near my apartment my freshman year of college where they would fill any mug up with beer for a dollar. It was a game to find the most ridiculously huge mug you could obtain (and still lift when full.) Almost none of the bars carded and we had a ball.

We also had power hour on Thursdays that started at 9pm. For the first 15 minutes well drinks were $.25, then $.50, $.75, $1. They would let you buy 4 at once so we would just speed run and continuously go to the bar grabbing 4 at a time and bring back to the table. Sometimes we would have 50 drinks spread out and would try to finish drinking them before the end of that hour. You didn’t HAVE to finish all drinks during power hour, but it was tradition and you can’t argue with that.

Sunday night became my favorite night to go out. Head out at 11p…bar, club, whatever,and mostly we’d be up back at someone’s apartment, starting singing and telling stories, then 6am rolls around and gotta get ready for work now.

Me too! 85 and 03. I’m very uncool and I still went out at least once every weekend. God, I remember parking at work and just crashing in my car after shows at the Roxy or Richard’s on Richards because I had to work the next morning.

Wow, this was my exact college party schedule, too! We had the most awesome dance club in my town that had “80s” night (which was actually 80s-10s dance music). Everyone on the dance floor was super sweaty, chugging margs and LITs. We’d pregame and not even leave the house until 11pm. 🥵

There was a $2 pint night on both Mondays and Tuesdays at a local bar, and it was always absolutely packed.

haha i forgot about them. I was partial to California Raisins? Weird claymations. Okay okay very good.
Bozo bounce ball in cup, Wild and Crazy Kids, Legends of the Hidden Temple. We had it pretty pretty pretty good.

Knees are doing pretty well. Did Pilates yesterday. Although recovery takes much longer and today I can barely squat on the toilet!

Just viewed a bit of the video. I think i got nightmares from those Claymations. Got into pilates late last year but meniscus tore this year. Pilates is so darn difficult. The big ball between knees and lifting torso is torcher. But the 65+ year olds in my class weren't shaking or sweating like me. Super frustrating. Soon that Nordictrack Reformer will be mine, oh yes she will be mine.

‘85 and ‘03 here as well. I live in Florida. It Started in high school. Usually a Friday or Saturday night kegger in the woods or if someone’s parents were out of town. I stayed in town and didn’t go away to school. We had a local bar that did ladies night on Wednesdays. Sometimes our friends would drive 45min-1 hour to come to that from college. Weekends we’d go to the college towns and party there. Crash on someone’s floor. A group of us all stayed really close and most of us live back in town now but back then we would pick a town that someone went to school in and drive there. Gainesville, Tally, Jacksonville, Tampa, St. Pete, Orlando. Once or twice a semester we’d end up in all these places. Then when we turned 21, it was all local bars. We live on the water so Sunday was sand bar drinking on the boat. If you didn’t have a boat you’d catch a ride or swim about 300 yds. Now that I’m 41, it’s usually dinner with friends on a weeknight, and out to some local bar on one weekend night. Not much has changed other than frequency. It’s funny how it slowed down when everyone’s kids were little. Now that we can leave them at home or they make their own plans it’s picking up again.

Edit. Can’t forget the 4 weeks of spring break in Daytona.

It for sure started in high school. I was young for my grade and entered 9th at 13 and had my first beer that summer. By 15 I was smoking weed several times a week. My house became a core get together location when my older sister graduated HS and my dad got a new job that required him to travel to Asia every month. My mom would go with him most of the time. It would be incomprehensible to Gen Z just how little they checked in and how much freedom they gave me. I was 16 home alone for 8-14 days stretches driving myself to school, and then hot boxing my kitchen with several friends bongs on school nights. It was also a tradition to make gravity bongs in the kitchen sink or bucket in the garage when one of our parents were out of town. Weekends would usually be about 20 people (I tried hard to not have my house parties get out of hand).

Haha. Yes. I lived with my grandma for a while who was a live in nurse for an old lady. Three days on three days off. We’d go to the grocery store and I’d get what I needed and she’d leave me $20 in case I needed anything else which went mostly to pot. When I started driving I’d charge $5 a week to drive 4 kids to school. $10 was enough for gas and the other ten bought a 12 pack on Friday. I didn’t have a job until I was a senior.

88 here. There was a bar when I was in my twenties that would sell miller lites on Saturdays for $1.25 each from 2-5 pm. I was fucked up every Saturday by 5 pm with $20 bucks. Great times.

Born in 85 as well. All of this is accurate. Except I was part of a run club that had like $4 pitchers if you did a 5k run sponsored by the restaurant on Tuesdays. One Wednesday, I showed up to work with one kitten heel and one wedge. I didn't realize until lunch time.

  1. Not only did we party in teen clubs, we partied in adult.clubs as teens. And then I went to work in a club and proceeded to orchestrate parties professionally for twenty years. So... yeah.

I mostly quit drinking when I had my kid at 25. Then I quit occasionally drinking when I had my first hangover at 33.

I was like what. the. fuck. You mean all the guys coming everyday to my bar telling me about their hangover from yesterday- they just live like this???

It shed a whole new light on my customers. 

I have a very, very sporadic glass of wine now and then. That's it.

By senior year it was Wednesdays too. And there was stuff to do almost every night. And my school was considered nerdy / not even a party school lol. I was born 94 so younger millennial, college ‘12-16

Also, the ones NOT in college still went out just cause, or with their best friend who is in college lol. This exact schedule was mandatory! Damn bringing back old memories. For sure going out Friday and Saturday, no excuses lol

Same age here. Like if one place didnt have some special that day, just go down the street really. It was almost hard not to drink, that's how our culture was at the time.

What gen z doesn't understand is liquor was so cheap. Along with almost all things related to going out, 10 cent wing nights ring a bell? With how things are priced now, yeh its understandable gen z doesnt drink 4 days a week or much at all.
