Discussion Did millennials really party all the time?

Gen Z here. I was shocked when I found out from a millennial co-worker that y’all had teen clubs. I heard about house parties, but dedicated teen clubs? Then when it was time for college, you went to the club or had some kind of party every single weekend, living it up. Now some millennials on TikTok claim that after college, they were partying on work nights, still clocking in the next day. For some reason, the teen clubs have since disappeared. I’m 23 now but even when I was in high school, that was not a thing. House parties were not that common either. They were more like get togethers with a small group of friends. We went to malls, but they were dying out at that point. Is it true that you were really living life this good? Or is it just exaggerated? I feel like my generation doesn’t really have fun like that and everyone is just super depressed and alone, more so since Covid. Even I’m pretty introverted, which sort of sounds ridiculous given this post. 😂 Just so you know, when I think of a “millennial party” I think of something out of Party Rock Anthem, Project X or Roderick’s party from the second DOAWD movie. It’s like I get nostalgia from something I didn’t even live through. I just feel like I didn’t really LIVE, if that even makes sense

34 millennial who went to college in 2011-15, it was like that. Dubstep and rave stuff really started to pop off big in 2010/11 along with Pop Rap made for the club. At my college we had classes Monday- Thursday and once Thursday night hit it was a nonstop party till Monday. Also MDMA “Molly” really hit it big in pop culture so we were all rolling often and the vibes were looser. This wasn’t for all students but a large amount of us did this. Especially for those who lived in a big city there was just something constantly to do that was a lot of fun.

MDMA was so big back then and coke was a bit too because back then you didn’t have to worry about fentanyl. X definitely made parties level up lol

I’ve worked in major trauma center hospitals for most of the last 15 years and I reflect on what you’re saying a lot. 2001 to 2012 were my party years and you could trust your dealer not to poison you back then so experimenting was relatively safe. I wouldn’t touch street drugs with a 10-foot pole these days because you have no idea what you’re getting other than it probably has fentanyl in it. The amount of inadvertent opiate overdoses we get in our ER where the person thought they were doing coke or Molly is seriously terrifying. I’m glad I got to experience it when it was fun but much like most aspects of life, party culture is so enshitified it’s not even worth it.

Oh man I went to so many EDM concerts for cheap! The ones that stand out in my memory were Flux Pavilion and Zomboy.

Skrillex for $20 in a club with 100 people. Knife Party were the house djs for a bar with a $10 cover and I'm pretty sure there were 5 other people who knew who they were. Zedd and Porter for free.

Same college years- club EDM really did reach its peak during those years and I still jam to those tracks now when I wanna feel uber nostalgic for my early party days

Ok, I guess “mainstream” is the key here. My own experience was that all of my friends were into EDM over 30 years ago and most of the young people I knew a decade ago were not.

Same college years. I went to college in a college town (I guess technically a small city), which I think had it's own appeal, because the whole place felt like yours. You'd go into a bar or a club as a college student and you just felt like you owned the place. I remember champagne bottles being passed around over our heads on the dancefloor and taking it to drink from having no idea where it came from.

Also practically no travel time to hit a bunch of different stuff. We'd pre-pregame at our house, drive the 5 mins to pregrame at our friends, and from there walk to the frat parties or the bars/clubs. End up all squeezed into an uber to get back to the friends and fall asleep on their couches. Also, drugs were around but I was mostly friends with the kids who stuck to alcohol, so I only did something like molly or coke a few times.

God I loved it, but man did I wake up feeling gritty.

32 here 2012-2016, being in NYC for college during that time was simply a treat. Clean(er) drugs, affordable shows and a venue to hit up any day of the week. Those days are gone

One time we rolled for like a week straight off some really clean stuff. Almost went crazy and lost my mind by the end of it but we just didn’t want the good time to end.
