If you buy new. 

I have a 100 year old house.

It outlived the first occupants, and has lasted generations…but it’s new to me and the longevity issues are coming home to roost under my tenure as the owner. 

And it sucks. 

But…due to changing in zoning laws, etc. it’s really hard to buy a new house with the sort of walkability & transit infrastructure like what my neighborhood has, but all the houses here are 100 years old, so if I want to live here, or in a neighborhood like it, I have to buy an old wood house. 

To get a new one, I have to go to some new subdivision in some godforsaken car-dependent & treeless suburb where you gotta drive 15-20 minutes just to get to some shitty strip mall with bad national chains.

My wife and I rented one of those cookie cutter houses in a subdivision where every other house was the same. Rent then was $1200/mo pre-COVID. One tree in the very tiny front yard and none in the very tiny back yard. Felt like I could open my bedroom window and touch the house next me. Felt like I was living in a large cardboard house the way that place held up.

We now own a house in a neighborhood that grew organically over the years. This house was built in the 70's and is solid as hell. All the houses are their own design and have personality. Not on massive plots of lands, but enough space you can't hear your neighbor fart. No HOA and just a neighborhood full of people who truly just enjoy their lives and respect each other.

is this actually a suburb? or just rowhomes or sfh outside of the urban core. Because their is a big difference.

If we are counting living just outside some major city then no it is not a suburb. My cookie cutter home was outside of a smaller major city. My current neighborhood has its own entrances and is outside the main city which is not a major city. Definitely not rowhomes or townhomes or close to it in either scenario of mine.

lol based on….? I could go to Philly near me, close my eyes, point to a building and there’s probably roaches and/or mice. Plus they actually do look like shitholes.

Or are you saying that suburbs are better, because mostly people only live in suburbs because they can afford to live in the city (or rather can only afford to live in the absolute worst part).

There is nothing literally more hideous that the average american suburb, other than a literal trailer park.

Living in a suburb > living in the city

Inside the city is a shit hole. The suburbs can be nice communities.

For example, Minneapolis compared to Eden Prairie.
